Above is a photo of pupils of St Micheal Primary School, Ota enjoying their free meals yesterday as FG's Homegrown School Feeding Programme progresses. More states to follow

Source: http://www.trezzyhelm.com/2017/02/fg-homegrown-school-feeding.html

The problem is the real cost per meal may be #200 but the contractor might have charged FG #2000 per meal while the person in charge would have received his own kick back too.

Good for them. But my question still remains, what happens when they get home? Whatever happened to "teach me how to fish and not give me fish " just eludes me. Some of these children will get home to meet their parents yawning because of lack of food. The federal government should get their priorities right. This is fulfilling their campaign promises but to me, it won't change a thing about the ailing economy.

Please, who's giving out the check for Fp? I just made front page after three years

Obviously you lack an understanding of how the school feeding program will impact the economy. And your analogy of teach me how to fish here is simply amazing. shocked shocked So wait o, these children are supposed to be taught how to "fish" grin grin? Ain't that why there are in school in the first place? At that age what really can be taught them if not the elementary and basic blocks of life and the provision of a free meal being a great enticement to get them to enjoy learning while also addressing the issue of hunger and good health! How many birds does that programme kill now?

I think you underestimate the impact of the program. Free school meals address the cycle of poverty by addressing enrolment/ attendance deficits and ensuring proper development of the children. These impacts are invisible but have huge forward impact.

On the monetary side, the people who make the food and the people who they buy from are having their businesses supported by government with multiplier effects when they spend the money. Remember all this is taking place at the base of the pyramid which is where the greatest number of Nigerians are. Yes billion dollar investments are dramatic but a lot of the top of the pyramid investments find their way out of the country through imports and capital flight.

The government should be congratulated for turning their back on the old failed " trickle down" economics that the rich have used to enslave the majority.

I know it's fashionable to knock the government but let's be discerning and encourage them when they do something right. A people friendly policy must start somewhere.

This is not what we need now. The money for this can be translated for free education of the children and youths. After eating this and your parents are asked to pay N5,000 (five thousand naira) at the Primary School level in some States, what use is of the free food?

Congratulations for making front page.

The Federal Government should be commended for helping poor parents and guardians to reduce the burden of feeding their children.
But it is unfair to blame the government for the stupidity of poor couples who breed children they cannot feed.
Couples who cannot even have three square meals a day are the ones breeding like rabbits and competing for who will increase the population of Nigeria more than others.
