Should FG Extend TETFUND To Private Universities? by Nobody: 1:39pm On Feb 07, 2017 |
Over the past weekend the VC of Joseph Ayo Babalola university reiterated the need for the FG to include private varsities in TETFUND projects. Many private universities already clamoured for the inclusion of private universities in the TETFUND program, arguing that since the money generated is obtained from the private sector, it makes no sense for private universities to be excluded. My take on this issue is this, in other climes(countries)private universities are also funded by their federal government especially in research. This is done in view that whatever government invest in the university system would reap great rewards for the country in Sci/Tech advancement which would culminate in the total growth of the nation. A case in study would be Caltech university which research is partly funded by the Min. Of Ed of the US govt. and this is done irrespective of the 'high' tuition payed by students of that university. I would however be careful in applying that model for Nigeria, recognising that many FG owned institutions still lag behind infrastructure-wise and the existence of the TETFUND as barely made an impact. Therefore, adding private universities to the numerous number of universities that the FG has to cater for would only make TETFUND impact seem inexistent since the budget for each university would become slimmer. Nevertheless, I insist that FG must make a clear distinction between"for-profit" and "not for profit" based private institutions. The "not for profit" in my opinion deserve TETFUND just as much as any public university does irrespective of her 'high' tuition fees. In all the FG must recognize that education is a social service and all Stake Holders must be fully supported for the advancement of Nigeria's future leaders -Ife Olaleye

Exactly, these private institutions contribute to education and are taxed as well, they are being robbed by not being included in TETFUND! 1 Like 1 Share |
