I seem to be having challenges with Airbnb too. I plan to book 2 weeks (14 days) and I used the filter to narrow the search to suit our budget, but it would appear that my choices are gone even before the hosts respond to me. Is it possible that they're intentionally blocking off my preferred dates? Their policy say they're race, colour and bla bla bla blind. Have you also noticed that most of the reviews are left by other races? No black reviewers in there. Esughusughu: 1 Like |

yimiton: I don't know if they are intentionally blocking the dates but not sure about that (I may be wrong). We booked Airbnb too and it was tough getting a place based on our budget and dates so we had to adjust dates. We had planned on booking for 2 weeks but couldn't get a place we liked because they were either fully booked or some days in between were booked so we ended up booking one week and the place was very good. 2 Likes |

yimiton: Perhaps, you might want to look at kijiji.ca ... You should be able to find something temporary. CC: Esughusughu For anyone coming to Ottawa. If there is a place you saw and need help viewing it before accepting. I would be willing to help you view it. All I ask is you let me know on time so that i can schedule my time accordingly. maziude: Hi Maziude...on the bilingual requirement for jobs in ottawa, how bad is it? |
Re: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant by maziude: 4:43pm On Oct 25, 2017 |
Rebarobyn: Boss, Not that bad though. Although some jobs (some bank roles, some front desk roles etc) do require it. In the real sense, there are as much bilingual jobs as usual one language jobs. You just have to search for that which suits you. You might also want to pick up a bit of french along the way (Dont be like me, I never even start french course sef). If you are the type that don't shy away from all kinds of job, then you should be good. Let me point out here just like our seniors have been saying, some jobs require certification ( So if you intend to continue with your line of work or switch to a job and if these require certification etc,) be kind enough to yourself to acquire them. It wont kill you but will help you in the long run. Also, if you get a job (and perhaps it aint in your line of work or it is just to make body and soul meet until a better one comes), please do it with all your heart. Recommendations go a long way here from what I have seen so far and this helps you build your network. PS: I never start work, so I might be wrong. 20 Likes 1 Share |

[quote author=yimiton post=61757935]I seem to be having challenges with Airbnb too. I plan to book 2 weeks (14 days) and I used the filter to narrow the search to suit our budget, but it would Don't let that get to you just keep searching till you get what you need. First time in calgary I had trouble getting a booking cuz 1. It was too close to my intended stay 2. I wanted to book 2 weeks but most places are booked for a couple of days within my 2weeks and they are not going to throw out that reservation to accommodate me. 3. Some humans beings are very narrow minded and require a 'jump and pass' approach. Second time in calgary was a breeze, had to choose between 2 hosts, an Asian and a nigerian doctor, went with the Nigerian and had an amazing time. All the best in your search! 4 Likes |

Oh forgot to mention that there are certain peak periods where most places are booked for a couple of days, like the Stampede thing in calgary 1 Like |

Just be bold and proud to tell them you are a Nigerian. There is always someone waiting to eat your jollof rice(like my host) or your moi-moi(like the white lady on the drivers licence enquiry desk at Brampton) Someone i met (a ghanian) wanted to talk down Nigeria in front of my nice host by narrating a crime committed by a Nigerian and guess my response to him? Anyone could have done that. It is not about your country it is about your person. Me wey dey ask almost any black person i see here if dem be naija? Na so i go ask one elderly black man inside bus who come tell me say im be Trinidad and Tobago but im fit be Nigerian descent wey oyibos carry im ancestors for slavery. Proudly Nigerian. I eventually got a place. Booked for 10 nights. It seemed perfect until I paid and noticed there's no kitchen! Now, I'm thinking I have to cancel but the other options are so expensive. flyhigh1881: |

yimiton: Sorry about that. Maybe you should cancel. I think you should keep searching as other people cancel and you get what you want or as another senior advised, check kijiji. |

yimiton: Some do block off the dates because they don't want any guests at that particular period. Just keep searching. In my own case, after canceling, they said they would be traveling and will block the dates in their calendar. But as at now those dates are still open. People have had good experiences, but I won't advise you to mention anything Nigeria. If they ask me again, I'll say Dublin, after all my flight would transit there. |

maziude: That's so nice of you. God bless. I still keep checking everyday. czaratwork:You're very right in your assertions, and I remember clearly your landlady is Jamaican. I met the wrong set of hosts who used my nationality to put me off (they had awesome reviews, were within my budget and available too). But I'd rather not mention anything if it'll cause a stumbling block in getting what I desire. Then when I land, I can wave the flag of patriotism. 2 Likes |
