I won't even lie, if this Canadian thing work, and I have to go, I will be scared small o..

At least married people have each other.

Me I'm a bit worried, how do Nigerian meet other single people in Canada?

Moving to a new country where everyone is going to be struggling to adjust and start life afresh, what time will people have to socialize? (Single people that is)

Apart from POF ish initially, this is one of the reasons I have been dragging on following through with this canada waka. Feel better knowing there are other people that feel something similar.
Trust me...single people find it easier...All what single people have is just their handbag...you can wake up one day, pack your bags and relocate to another province...You can move even up to yukon for job without having to worry about family....
You meet people in trains, buses, work, church, clubs, volunteering e.t.c you meet people everywhere.

Exactly my point! It's not about being able to move up n down or squat with a friend like canadianfly suggested.

It's about moving from one community where I've got family, friends, good job, loved ones TO a cold place where I don't have family, friends and no guarantee of a good job. It's like starting from the scratch. It is that risk and uncertainty that kinda scares me. Not to forget that cold......

What I mean is married people have each other so no matter how bored you are, U'd always have each other plus the nutty kids to disturb you.

Salford suggested he doesn't understand y anyone wud want to stay in Nigeria. Anyway that's topic for another discussion....

Don't get me wrong, I have valid reasons for doing d PR stuff and I'd def move before it expires....

Lol I stay on Canadian related threads. Everyone knows pidgin would trade passports in a heart beat. She's really just insulting herself. She's not worthy of a reply let alone an acknowledgement. Her president finally came back from a 3 month long medical vacation. She must be hype !!

Lool I can understand you perfectly , but be honest with your self if you are an introvert in Naija and single, coming to Canada will make it worse..the culture here is not like naija in times of relating with people(you cant just see a very fine girl in the bus stop and go chat her up that is creepy to them ) and the loneliness can be real..

In summary its 80 percent about you, if you did not have a relationship all this while in Naija, its not Canada's fault..and relationship is all about responsibilities in naija most youths under 30 earning less than 150k a month its hard to think of relationship..so that is why you want to come to canada in the first place to be have a better economic life.

So for the good news its not over you can build relationships here, naija churches , universities too you will see single girls you can mingle with and if you are open minded there are other African nationalities here like Ghanaian's etc then there are also Asians, Europeans

So if you major fear is about the culture its understandable, but all in all there is hope if you willing to work it

Another issue is when u are OK in Canada u can hook up with someone from naija some way somehow and sponsor are to come here , if you cant handle their culture here.

so what culture should you be worried about , personal beliefs and lifestyle..you see someone tell you straight she is an aethist, so if you marry her hmmm no church for your children, other funny beliefs like 420 friendly(cannabis smoker), tattoos, drinking and partying lifestyle, not much submission, and also they can wake up tomorrow and say am no more doing..

but it all its worth the risk.

cheers

I don't mean to upset anyone and i apologise if i do but from my observation which is mainly derived from interacting with people living in both countries, those living in UK often appear more exposed, more involved with life in general and less thrifty whereas those settled in Canada often come across as unexposed, overly thrifty and generally backward.

When an individual from a Nigerian rural area travels to UK and returns, his orientation changes and it is clear that he has become more exposed but if the same individual goes to Canada and returns, he remains the same.

Trash sad

Well the thing is this, phone plans in Canada are like renting a house or apartment lol.

It's not like Naija or UK you can land and just buy SIM card at the airport, recharge and start calling. As in pay a as you go....nah. Most if not all the phone companies offer a prepaid service. Check with your intended province though to be certain. But just like apartments, you'll need at least a working bank account and proof of address (and this is hard when you haven't found a place yet). So yes, it took me two weeks to get settled in, find an apartment, open a bank account, wait to get my bank statement with the address showing on it as proof of address, then compare and contrast what mobile company had a plan WITHOUT OFFERING ME A PHONE (I had my own phone from the UK and didn't want to buy another phone). If you need to call your village people in Naija to tell them you arrived safely, grin use whatsapp call.
In my case I was emailing everyone for two weeks. Whatsapp hadn't developed well then.

Anyway, most mobile phone companies in Canada found it weird when I said ONLY LINE RENTAL NO PHONE. Because line rentals come with phones, that add to your bill at the end on every month.
Anyway, long story short, if you plan on going with your current phone, sign a month to month prepaid line rental.....and avoid all these 2 year contract deals. You can't break a contract if you change your mind, except you pay them off. The amount is not cheap. If you vex and break it, they'll mess up your credit. When it's time for buying house 2 years down the line, you'll not get a mortgage because you fought with your phone company over phone lol.

I got a freedom mobile plan (4GB data, unlimited national calls for 40 dollars) the next day after I landed without any of those mention documents. I think this is currently one of the best plans in Canada now. Just be sure they have coverage where you are residing!

Plus I paid stupid tax untop that 40 dollars! The thing dey pepper body mehn! Lol!

Never heard of freedom mobile before lol. Na new generation company? This is good info here, at least people won't have to wait that long.
What province is this though? And how do you pay them? In other words, they were fine you had no bank account?

Hello house,

Got our pick up mail for our stamped passport, family of 4. some few questions I would like to ask,

1. What is the best way of carrying money to canada(entire money)

2. We will be leaving by October to winnipeg, what are we to expect.

3. Are there any vaccination we need to do before leaving.

4. We have a 2 years old daughter and a 7 month old son any idea of how we can manage them through this long journey?

5. We plan on carrying food items with us, any advice on the best way to do this.

I will really need the input of the house.

Thanks

I am not very sure of what you mean but I can possibly relate to what you may be saying.

I remember in 2007 on one of my visits to South Africa, I was so surprised to discover that in South Africa it was possible to rewind a Live TV show. My host was equally surprised given that I was someone who was coming from Canada and had never seen that feature before. I insisted by telling my host that we didn’t have that in Canada.

Fast forward 2013, I visited my brother’s house in Toronto and I discovered he was also able to rewind live TV. My brother then explained to me that this feature had been in Canada for a long time, all I had to do was to call my cable company and request it.

Fast Forward 2016 - A friend of mine who is an officer in the Canadian Army visited me. He was born and raised in Canada. In the midst of watching a hockey game, I took the remote control and rewind the game back to a previous action. My friend screamed, “What?” “Are you able to rewind a live game?” He was so surprised. The same way I felt 9 years earlier in South Africa.

There are so many things I have discovered through my interaction with people who live in Africa. For instance, when I got my computer Science degree here in North America, I had never heard of such a thing as CCNA Certification. It was in an online discussion forum that I was made aware of its existence by someone who lives in Africa.

In North America we are exposed to so many things and it is impossible to access and process all information. That may explain why an individual who leaves rural area in Nigeria to go to Canada would return to Nigeria the same. He would just be lost by how fast the wheel is spinning in North America.

Please forgive my English. I am someone who can be identified as French Canadian. No, I am not French . I am an African Canadian whose first language is French, that makes me a French Canadian.

By the way, I didn't see anything wrong with your English.

@all To what extent does not being bilingual limit one's potentials, especially for an English-speaker?
