@ Slimshay

I agree fully bro. . . .we do need to do an end of year review in detail. I'll start work on it now.

Wenger says it won't be a 'full first 11' but it's according to him it should still be an 11 as strong as the Porstmouth group. It'll be interesting to see how he manages to achieve that.

Senderos has been missing due to a foot injury (not because Wenger wants to sell him as some claim) and will start if he passes a fitness test.

Wenger also claims Bordeaux won't want to sell Chamakh in January cos they're top of the league and in the CL. . . that means two things to me: Either he's saying Chamakh has to say he wants to move before a deal will happen, OR he's considering signing a pre-contract with the lad to bring him to Arsenal in the summer in which case we might simply get someone on loan to fill the gap

All speculations I know, but that's what January is for - speculating while hoping the club churns out satisfactory results prior to the 'Death Crunch' (copyright Arseblog) that comes at the end of January/early February.

Arsene has hinted we wont be going first 11 to West Ham, would have been worried, but with Zola's current survival struggles i doubt he would be putting out his own first 11 either.

Its actually looking like most of WH's consistent performers so far this season are out of this match (apart from Diamanti), a quick visit to the WH section of the physio room reveals thus:

Herita Ilunga Hamstring Injury 10th Jan 10
Scott Parker Hamstring Injury 10th Jan 10
Mark Noble Hamstring Injury no return date
Zavon Hines Knee Injury no return date
Carlton Cole Knee Injury 10th Jan 10

I think we should be able to win this even with a Carling cup strength team but football is never that straightforward as Liverpool v Reading aptly illustrated today.
Senderos has been missing due to a foot injury (not because Wenger wants to sell him as some claim) and will start if he passes a fitness test.
I've never been one of those calling for Big Phil's head as most other defenders have struggled against the likes of Torres and Drogba for which he has been villified. 24 year old international CBs of such experience are not readily available on the market (particularly one who came through our academy too). The problem with Big Phil in the grand scheme of things is the high defensive line we play which is quick to expose the lack of pace in defenders (as an obviously waning Kolo Toure illustrated last season).

If he can learn to position himself better and not get isolated into 1v1 races that allow strikers to turn him then he should be just fine. I'm a bit sceptical of the injury issue however though I doubt Arsene would lie about such a thing but it is obvious a move was seriously discussed to Everton in the summer but things cld have changed since then.

In the long run, he might also struggle to reassert himself in the midst of the quite good young CBs we're developing right now like Nordtveit(on loan at Nurnberg), Kyle Bartley and Luke Ayling. The truth is that we wldn't have bought Vermaelen if Arsene considered him good enough as a first teamer and we've never heard of Arsene ever discussing selling Djorou (despite his injury issues) so its likely he's moved ahead of Phil in the pecking order and is being kept as a potential replacement for Gallas in the near future.

The most surprising recognition of Jack Wilshere's talent so far, I wonder what Sauron has to say about this. undecided
Jack Wilshere a 'superstar in waiting' - Former Manchester United striker Andy Cole
Cole joins queue to praise Arsenal's Liam Brady incarnate.

Former Manchester United striker Andy Cole has described Arsenal's prodigiously talented academy graduate Jack Wilshere as a "superstar in waiting".

"I've written about Arsenal's Jack Wilshere before," Cole said in The Independent. "The kid is 17 [sic] and his talent is frightening.

"Every time I've seen him he's played well. I'm surprised he hasn't played more often because he's a diamond, a superstar in waiting."

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has been meticulous in nurturing the development of the teenager who turned 18 today, Friday, and is reportedly looking to secure a loan spell away from Ashburton Grove for the attack-minded midfielder.

The Frenchman has likened Wilshere's potential first-team education to that of former Arsenal pupil Ashley Cole, who enjoyed a temporary spell at Crystal Palace before going on to establish himself as Arsenal's first choice left-back.

Owen Coyle's Burnley are believed to be leading the chase for a six-month loan deal.

I saw the comment too but decided not to bring it to Sauron's notice cus i suspect he's going to find one reason to discredit Andy Cole just to support his warped point in regards to "Morrison" . . .

The best people that know if a player is gifted or not are fellow players cus its easy for them to know when a player is hard working or when the player really has the gifts of skills . . .

Sauron's writings are always an interesting read but I'm waiting to see how he wiggles out of this one.  grin
On another more important note, the opening of the transfer window gets me scared of the contract situation of 2 of our players as most of the others I'm interested in have been tied up (including Lansbury and Jay Emmanuel Thomas). I can't help thinking Arsene is at a crossroad as he might have to choose btw Merida and Rosicky.

They are both free to start discussing with other clubs and neither of them has been tied down yet.
To be honest I don't want to lose either of them but our squad is already bloated enough with quality players as it is with us having to send so many players out on loan including someone of Jack Wilshere's class. I think Arsene should start exploring the buy back option with some of our younger players as Madrid did with Granero, we could then sell Merida to Athletico with a buy-back option at a stipulated price as they are quite interested in him.
Re: Arsenal Fan Thread: For Gunners Only. by rasputinn(m): 8:13am On Jan 03, 2010
Now that Chamakh has said he's not leaving Bourdeux, are we buying any additional strikers,I think not.Arsene has opined that having scored the most goals so far this season,he wasn't looking at buying a striker.

So Le Prof,if not a striker, are you getting us an additional midfielder(Song will soon leave for Angola and Denilson is still nursing an injury) and a left full back?(Clichy is and Gibbs shocked shocked are still out,we're left with Traore shocked and Silvetsre shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked)
Re: Arsenal Fan Thread: For Gunners Only. by Ibime(m): 9:06am On Jan 03, 2010
I think Le Prof will go for Gignac. . . . he fits the profile of what Arsenal need a lot more than Chamhakh. . . . he is strong, tall enough and excellent with his back to goal. . . . he lacks the skill of Chamakh but for a 4-5-1, he's adept at playing the lone striker role, which I dont think Chamhakh is most suited to play. . . . plus, Gignac isnt having the same season this year as he did last, so I think he would be cheaper this time around. . . .

Another person Arsenal can go for is Jo. . . . his talent has been wasted at Man City and Everton. . . . so far in England, he's only played for teams who play high-balls, and balls into the channels for him to chase, and that is not his strength cos he's not the fastest. . . . however Jo would be brilliant for teams that play the ball into feet just like Arsenal. . . . Jo is a no 10, not a no 9, and infact, when he was at CSKA, he was the left-footed carbon-copy of Kanu. . . . at £7m, I think he would be snip for a manager who knows how to deploy him properly. . . . if a quintessential no10 like RVP can play the lone man role for Arsenal, then Im sure Jo can also do it. . . .
Re: Arsenal Fan Thread: For Gunners Only. by edoyad(m): 9:41am On Jan 03, 2010
Arsene i would like to believe is not a naive person. Out of the 50 goals we've scored so far in the league, one-fifth came from RVP and Bendtner who are both out injured; another decent percentage came from center backs who will not find easy goals like they did earlier in the season.
Any talk of not bringing in a CF whether on loan or permanent basis would be akin to the worst form of Russian roulette.

@Dudu its a new year oh, lets enjoy our thread before inviting vermins

@ ibime, i think we have enough injury problems as it is, before inviting another injury prone Jo into our team.

If only Bendtner had made it back then prolly i will be on the stingy side myself. But as it is, he's still not back. We need a stop gap striker at least until we get our 'preffered option' Chamahk in the summer. But if indeed we can get a fitting striker on a long term now, why not?! If not for the price concern im not averse to Edin Dzeko myself. As wenger himself stated that getting a cup-tied striker would have him focus the striker on domestic trophies while we prosecute Champs league just as we are.

Anyways its the silly season so speculations are always welcome. At least so far we have seen Bellamy, Pavluchenko, so i guess we will see more until we actually do get one.

I pray he does too but the Wenger i know sees nothing wrong with the present squad. I sincerely think we need replacement for Song who has been superb this season.

I would say its about 50/50, Arsene is never one to pass by a good bargain as he did with Baptista in the 06/07 season particularly when we are a bit light up front at present, but I agree its definitely not going to be the 20-40 million range striker most peeps are expecting and personally, he's got my backing on that.

I'm almost sure he won't buy a striker, the MF player position is rather fuzzy and that is what I think he meant by saying it depends on the situation with injuries (Denilson's back injuries seem to have been reoccuring and might require a long term solution that will keep him out for an extended period) and Arsene might be loath to put faith in untested players like Eastmond and Coquelin with Song on ANC duty. Besides, the Blaise Matuidi rumors never seem to die down and he is even more known as a Makelele role player than Song is so might be what we need with all our remaining MF players being more attack minded .

I'm surprised Wilshere is starting, thot the idea was for him not to be FA cup tied before going on loan. Except if he'll be going on loan to West Ham and not Burnley considering we want to knock them out.  undecided
