Buhari's Whereabouts:what Are Nigerians Afraid Of? by shattarwale: 4:03pm On Feb 15, 2017
In the beautiful adage of a tribe from Africa, 'men are never afraid of their belongings'. Five more days will make it one full month Nigerian President, Mohhamodu Buhari left for leave and medical Care in London. As required by law, Buhari obtained a constitutional order from the national assembly to empower his Vice, Professor Osibanjo to be President in acting capacity. Nigerians saw that the process of law was duly observed for the President's periodic absence from duty owing to health challenges since he assumed power as commander in Chief. But after President Buhari traveled, say two days of his departure, Nigerians were terrified by the news of Buhari's sudden demise in a UK hospital. This terrific news saturated the global social media within hours of its release. The Presidency in an attempt to dispel the news as fake, compounded the issue as so many conflicting information emanated from Buhari's media team. Nigerians were forced to question the true health condition of Mr President. To prove the President was heal and hearty, many ridiculous Photoshops were sent online, showing where Buhari and some notable members of his political party, who flew to London to visit him. In this seemingly brainless Photoshop production, President Buhari was also seen still wearing the same color of a cloth he wore last year the same team of party bigwigs visited him. This whole scenario only created fun for online visitors in Nigeria. But the whole political machinations took a melodramatic turnaround when the ten days of Mr President leave expired. Nigerians had expected the return of their President to end the untidy stories being hovered around concerning his fragile health condition. We were even informed that the President would come on Sunday to resume work on Monday. It was at that period that the bigger drama came to scene two. Nigerians were shocked to hear the Senate had approved a letter from Mr President requesting for an indefinite time of leave for more medical treatment. The letter for this second approval was written and signed and sent to the Senate on Sunday, an unofficial day and date. Yet, the Nigerian Senate approved the letter without reading it on the floor; thereby committing a grievous constitutional breech. Still on the same premise, the Senate action was totally incongruous with legislative ethics as Nigeria's constitution has no provision for indefinite time period for the President to be off duty.
This irresponsible constitutional behaviour by the law makers has necessitated serious public outcry for President Buhari's whereabouts. The demand for Buharis whereabouts heightened when his media aid told Nigerians that Buhari was no longer in a London hospital but was observing rest in an undisclosed apartment. As this drama continues, many conclusions came from all quarters making derogatory positions about the President's health and possible death. In the desperate attempt to prove that Mr President was still alive and could talk, we are hearing and reading from the social media and the conventional media that our President Buhari has spoken with the American President, Mr Trump. This episode from this singular experiment has received highest hype from Nigeria government quarter.
And this is why I am writing this piece. When has the act of a sick President speaking with American President become a sign of recovery from sickness? How does a doubtful conversation between Buhari and Trump answer the curious questions of Nigerians on the incapacitated health condition of Buhari to rule Nigeria? Could it have been better for Buhari to talk to Trump instead of Nigerians from whose personal income taxes and resources his hospital bills are PAID? Is Buhari still Nigeria's President? If the answer is yes, where is Buhari? What is happening in today's Nigeria? Is Nigeria a country that is still ruled by its constitution? Where are the men in Nigeria, and what are they afraid of? Why is PDP not talking or asking critically required questions as the major opposition political party in the country? Why are the Yorubas quite? Why is Fayose not lamenting on this serious national disorder? Why has Fani Kayode not written about this thwarting of our construction? What are Nigerians afraid of? Are there still Nigerians who believe in Nigeria? These and more questions we shall continue to ask until a satisfied answer is provided.
