In what seems like an early clampdown on opposition, 51 supporters of former President Yahaya Jammeh of Gambia were on Sunday arrested by the Gambian police for insulting those returning from the inauguration of the country’s new President.



Reuters report that the arrests were made in a western town of Kafenda, a stronghold of the country’s exiled erstwhile leader.

“They were provoked by the supporters of the coalition (Barrow’s party) who … were calling Jammeh all sorts of names and saying he was a killer. Then a quarrel ensued.”
Seedy Njie, a spokesman for the Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction, Jammeh’s party when he was in power, said.



He also confirmed that those arrested were members of his party, and that they were wearing T-shirts with an image of Jammeh’s face.

Jammeh narrowly lost a Dec. 1 election to Barrow after 22 years of authoritarian rule. He initially refused to step down but fled to Equatorial Guinea last month as ECOWAS forces descended on the capital Banjul to uphold the election result.
