The United Nation’s Refugee Agency has revealed that 517 Nigerian refugees fleeing from Boko Haram attacks in the North east have been forcefully repatriated to Nigeria by Cameroonian authorities.

In a statement to the AFP on Wednesday, the United Nation’s High Commissioner for Refugees expressed concern that 517 Nigerians fleeing from the deadly Islamist group were deported, with the number including 313 who had requested asylum.

The agency said it planned to sign an accord with Cameroon and Nigeria on March 2 for the voluntary return of 85,000 Nigerian refugees, but it also said it was continuing to urge Cameroonian authorities to offer asylum and respect international conventions against forced repatriation of asylum seekers.

“UNHCR, aware of the security challenges in the area as a result of the recurring attacks by the Boko Haram sect, continues to advocate with the Cameroonian authorities in order to maintain access to asylum and respect the rights of asylum seekers.”
The statement read.

According to UNHCR, more than 61,000 Nigerian refugees have been registered at the Minawao camp in northeast Cameroon as of February 17 2017, with many others still living outside the site.
