PaperLace: The problem in Nigeria workforce is superiority complex. They forget there is something called division of labour and specialisation. There are accountants, bankers, economists, marketers, managers... they all come together to makeup the business unit and achieve a common goal. There are doctors, nurses, pharmacist, paediatricians, gynaecologists... forming the medical unit. None is greater than the other, but no_ in Nigeria, a doctor feels he is higher than a nurse, an accountant feels he is higher than a banker, an architect feels higher than an estate manager...the list goes on. 'and you wonder why we achieve lil or nothing in our various sectors. |

Even though I am an Engineer, this is a hard truth: only a very few Nigerian Professional Certification has value globally. Among the first 3 happens to be ICAN. I have even seen Engineers go for this certification, because of the level of professional competency you acquire after the programme, dignity it brings, and self satisfaction. The UK we borrowed almost everything we have lived by as a nation deceived us and left us wallowing, and they standardized and benchmarked all things in their own country while Nigeria wallow in intellectual penury. Otherwise, what value has the NYSC NIM programme when compared to an MBA degree. It will be better if Corp Members can use that energy and money invested in NIM to make their place of primary assignment a better place. On the topic, CIBN has face value in Nigeria only. Another important truth that most Nigerians don't know is that even with your SSCE/WAEC, you can enroll and start the ICAN programme. My brother did that many years back even before he got University admission. He made sure my sister enrolled into ICAN programme and finished it at 200 level while she was still a student. So this is still a viable option. Lastly, every profession and qualification is distinct and we must recognize that and, but unfortunately the Nigerian system don't want to do that. Rather, it is always that a HND graduate is inferior to a BSc/BEng graduate; a nurse is less qualified to a doctor. This problem is even more exacerbated by most of multinationals (including almighty "big 4" consulting companies). In UK, even with HNC/HND you can become a Chartered Engineer if you can show the level of competency and validate that over the course of your career, and it is this means of competency validation that drive organizational change and economic growth and prosperity. But in Nigeria, it is all about paper qualifications. Only God will help us! 2 Likes |

Fast forward to 2018, CBN is working on making it compulsory for Bankers of certain level to bag that certification. It is a major criteria to very key positions in the banking sector. ICAN for now is more prestigious but trust me if u're in the banking sector, kindly do CIBN cos u'll need it and appreciate u did in the long run. Very soon it might become a recruitment criteria for banks (for strategic positions) just like ICAN is for audit firms. Forget those that did it donkey years ago and haven't seen the relevance, I know management staff in the bank that are burning the midnight oil to bag that certification. |

Do professional examinations for personal development. The knowledge you gain from this professional examinations are top notch. It just makes you better than you colleagues who are not qualified. Its a simple truth. That CIBN is not recognised in nigeria is a lie biko. Of course, maybe for some people the certificate doesnt land them their dream jobs i dont think i can doubt that these qualified ones are far more professionally enlightened than the unqualified one(and of course not in all cases but definately in most) |

Xprincess:Yes, it is possible to do ICAN regardless of whatever first degree you have bagged. ICAN is 3 stages: Application(i think 4 or 5 papers) Skills(6 papers) Professional(5 papers) Depending on your first degree(if not accounting) you could still get exemption for some papers in application level. How to go about it: if you are in lagos, i advice you find somewhere called PYE or WYSE, they seem to be the best ICAN tutorial centres in nigeria(i av heard good stories about them). If you are not in lagos, google up ican tutorial centres, you should get a list of accredited centres and hopefully one will be in whichever state you are in. Simply walk in there, they will put you through. And You can also use the internet. That is also easy. 1 Like 1 Share |

Heartyz:From my own perspective CIBN look unattractive but is good olthe sense that it goes beyond accounting and teaches IT related stuffs. Most bankers suck at computer application use like spreadsheet and AI. |
