Drug Abuse has caused young people and adults to be wandering about, begging for food or money. As they talk to themselves or to others, it can be obvious that they are mentally imbalance. In the area where they live, those who know them usually trace their conditions back to excessive drinking of alcoholic beverage, smoking and or use of drugs such marijuana.

Unbelievably, inspite of the obvious evidence of the hazardous effects of drugs, healthy people still involve themselves in the consumption of such drugs. It has been a hard nut to crack for the governments all over the world to control the illegal trafficking of drugs. Those who are engaged in illegal trade in drugs finds it hard to stop due to huge profits they make despite the set-out penalty for anyone caught in the act.

What is Drug Abuse?
Drug abuse means misuse of or over indulgence in drugs or substance abuse. It also means the excessive or persistent use of a drug without regard to accepted medical practice. Drug abuse should not be confused with drug misuse, as drug misuse is the use of drugs for a purpose of which it is not meant for or in improper dosage. The term substance abuse is the abuse of all substances be it drugs or not. That is consumption of substances in a way or manner that is harmful to the body. Substances which can be abused are sugar and soft drinks. Drug Addiction is a complicated disease that needs long-term treatment, just like other chronic diseases. People begin to wonder why some people with sound mind will decide to put themselves in danger by taking harmful substances that may result to mental disorder or death.

Causes of Drug Abuse
There are several factors that can cause drug abuse. It varies from one person to another. Below are some of the common causes of drug abuse:

Curiosity
The desire to find out how it feels to take drugs can cause the younger ones to start taking drugs. When they have satisfy their curiosity, there will be the urge for a repeat experiment. From repeated experiment they are turned into drug abusers.

Peer Group
Most young people like to copy what their peers are doing. They join them in taking alcohol, smoking or drugs just to fit in with the peer group. As a matter of fact, this can lead to drug or substance abuse. Tolerance leads to addiction.

Having a history of Trauma
Young women who have experience s*xual abuse in early life, sometimes resorts to taking alcohol, smoking, drugs and substances which in turn increases their chances of drug addiction.
