Former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida took out a full page in the Sunday Sun to greet Chief Olusegun Obasanjo on his 80th birthday. The transcript of that message is as follows: My Oga, At 80, you celebrate a life of fulfilment, A life of selfless service to our dear nation, A life of trials and tribulations, of pains and anguish, in the course of safeguarding the unity and oneness of Nigeria. Your life is a moving story of a destiny child, whose narrative Symbolizes the awesome power of Almighty God, in seeing you through life and the verisimilitudes of our everyday engagement. You have remained the essential General from when you commanded the troops, till date when you have continued to offer voice to strengthen public discourse and sustain our unity of purpose. A General of all times with the credo of discipline and traits of a leader, detribalized in orientation and nationalistic in service. At 80, you are still bubbling with verve and energy; With the gusto of never-say-die spirit of a gentleman officer; Bold, courageous, determined, resilience and perseverance. At old age you still resonate the persona that defined your leadership in those good old days, you exude the candour of a trained mind, who is imbued with the patriotic theme, nurtured to defend the country, and sworn to uphold its unity. That you are bubbling in good health is God’s abiding grace, blessing, mercy and compassion which calls for celebration. It is a life full of achievements in service to our motherland. Obasanjo was reacting to an earlier statement by IBB, to the effect that Obasanjo should account for the $16 billion his government spent on power projects in Nigeria. “Its unlike Babangida. But if Babangida has decided on becoming a septugenarian, that he will be a fool, I think one should probably do what the bible says, in Proverbs chapter 26; verse 4. It says don’t answer a fool, because you may also become like him. When you go to the same Proverbs chapter 26; verse 5, it says, answer a fool so he will not think he’s a wise man.
