SUSPECTED armed robbers on Tuesday killed the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Ogere Police Station in Ogun State and two policemen during an attack on Union Bank.

A policeman was also shot in the leg.

The incident occurred barely 10 days after an Assistant Commissioner of Police in the state command, Mr. Omolodun Oladokun, was killed by unidentified hoodlums in Ijebu Ife.

Our correspondent learnt that the DPO, whose name was not given, was in the premises of the Ogere Police Station when the robbers struck at the bank.

Some of the robbers attacked the police station, which shares a fence with the bank, while others invaded the bank.

The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hashimu Argungu, confirmed the incident on the telephone.

“The details of the situation are still sketchy but we learnt that he (DPO) was killed when the robbers, who came in a bus, attacked the station; but we are still investigating,” the police commissioner said.

A source in the town, however, said the robbers came to set free some of their colleagues allegedly detained in the police station.

“They said some robbers were arrested around this place some days ago and detained in the station in Ogere. So, it was not the bank that they wanted to attack initially; though it was difficult to know if they eventually raided the bank,” the source said.

Robbers raided the same branch in November 2008 and 2009.

In November last year, the robbers disarmed the policemen at the station before raiding the bank.

A policeman, who hid in the toilet, was discovered when his mobile telephone rang.

The robbers, who thought he was trying to call for help with his phone, shot him and he died immediately.
