Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State has incurred the wrath of Lagos women.

The women have placed curses of different dimensions on him for locking them out of the Government House.

The governor had on Wednesday snubbed thousands of women who marched towards his office to celebrate this year’s International Women’s Day celebration.

The protesters were led Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin, the convener of Women Arise.

As the protesting women, who had demonstrated across major streets of the Lagos metropolis headed for the Governor’s office at the Secretariat, the security operatives at the gate simply refused them audience, under the pretext that Amdode was holding a “crucial meeting.”

The atmosphere became charged and the protesters, who had conducted themselves peacefully became furious and violent.

They were angry that no executive council member of the state or top civil servant came out to receive them.

In the process, one of the security details of the governor was injured.. He was hurriedly rushed to the hospital in the Government House.

With one of them injured, the security men became more adamant and refused to listen to leaders of the protest that the governor had agreed to speak with them

Bounce News learnt that the governor through one of aides had earlier informed the conveners of the march that only few of the members would be entertained by him.

The action of the security aides further irked the protesters who vowed to remain at the gate until someone came out to address them.

They sang different ant-government songs and vowed to work against the re-election of Ambode in 2019.

"Ambode is a thief", "No second term for Ambode in Lagos state", "Ambode is a goner," Y"ou will not know peace", were some of the chants by the people as they demanded to see the governor.

After, a long wait, the protesters proceeded to the Lagos State House of Assembly to meet with the Speaker and other members of the House.

There was, however, a mild drama as the protesters were heading towards the Assembly complex.

The protesters prevented the Lagos Chief Judge from moving towards the governor’s office.

The Chief Judge with other judges in the state were expected to meet with the governor.

They noted that since she is a woman, she should alight from the vehicle to address them.

All entreaties by her aides fell on deaf ears as the protesters insisted on the Chief Judge addressing them.

The Judge’s vehicle and her entourage had to make a detour, and passed through the Assembly complex instead.

While at the Assembly Complex, the Speaker, who had travelled out of the country, had delegated two members of the House, Tunde Braimoh and Olufunmilayo Tejuosho to address the women.

Braimoh, who addressed the protesters promised to convey their message to the whole house.

He said the House is fully committed to the welfare of women in the state.

The International Women’s Day celebration is celebrated worldwide on March 8.

The day's origin goes back to a mass mobilisation in 1908, when 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding the right to vote, better pay and shorter working hours.

The first official National Women’s Day march, led by the Socialist Party of America, took place a year later on 28 February.

International Women’s Day moved to 8 March in 1913, and was recognised by the United Nations – which now decrees an annual theme – in 1975.

The theme for 2017’s International Women’s Day is #BeBoldForChange.
