Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has suggested
captain John Terry still has a future at the club, despite
reports linking him with the Stamford Bridge exit door.
The former England defender has become a fringe
player under Italian boss Conte, having played just ten
games this season.
Terry turned down moves to Stoke City and West Brom
in January, but reports on Friday suggested he is now
open to joining another Premier League club when his
current Blues deal expires at the end of the season.
Chelsea take on Manchester United in the FA Cup
quarter-finals on Monday and, having played in every
round of the competition so far, Terry is expected to
take to the field.
And, speaking ahead of the game, Conte said he hopes
it is not the legendary skipper's final game for the
London club.
“I hope [it won’t be his last Cup game for Chelsea] no...
I don't know about this. I prefer every situation – my
situation, my players' situation – to face this type of
situation at the end of the season when it'll be the right
time for everyone.
“John is doing great work this season, on and off the
pitch and, for me, he's very important in this season
because he's the captain and, I repeat, he's working
very well on the pitch and helping me a lot in the
changing room. Transferring the right message. For
sure, he's an
important player for us.”
However, Conte refused to confirm if Terry will start the
Stamford Bridge clash.
The Italian boss added: “I have to decide the starting
XI.
For sure, I try to make the best decision for the team.
“We want to go into the next round, in the same way
Manchester United do, so I'll try and make the best
decision for the team. It's normal.”
