Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen who made billions of dollars as Microsoft’s co-founder, is spending millions of dollars on the Stratolaunch air-launch system.
Paul Allen started Stratolaunch five years ago, and since then the venture has been developing a 385 ft-wide, twin-fuselage airplane inside a giant hangar measuring about 103,000 sq-ft at Mojave Air and Space Port in California. Stratolaunch, is part of Paul Allen’s Vulcan Aerospace group, and it aims to begin launching payloads by the year 2020.
The key to the Stratolaunch air-launch system is a twin-fuselage plane that integrates parts from two Boeing 747 jets. It has a wingspan that stretches out to a record-setting 385ft (117m). That is twice the wingspan of a Boeing 747, and more than the length of a football field. In addition the tail of the plane is 50ft (15m) high. The overall length of the plane is 238ft (72m), compared to 224ft (68m) for the Dreamliner – Boeing 787.
Stratolaunch is meant to provide a cheaper and more flexible way to launch satellites into low-earth orbit. The aircraft will carry satellites high into the atmosphere before launching them.
Stratolaunch Systems is in partnership with Orbital ATK on a platform that will make use of the world’s biggest airplane to launch rockets into orbit. The two companies announced that they’ve forged a multi-year, production-based partnership, under which Orbital ATK will provide its Pegasus XL rockets for Stratolaunch’s system.
The rockets will be able to send satellites weighing up to 1,000 pounds into orbit, operating from a wide range of locations and targeting any orbital inclination. Artwork released by Stratolaunch suggests that as many as three rockets can be loaded aboard the airplane in a single flight.
Stratolaunch will undergo its first test flight when it has completely assembled later in the year.
