Chelsea FC made major acquisitions during the summer. They brought in Antonio Conte as the new manager, a replacement for the club’s legendary manager, Jose Mourinho. They also made major signings, bringing in some new players to help steady a crumbling ship. And boy! Have they done that in style. Currently sitting pretty comfortable at the summit of the premier league table with a 2 figure point advantage.

They brought in N’golo Kante, David Luiz, Michy Batshuayi and Marcos Alonso. Most fans weren’t really convinced with the quality of these buys based on the quality they projected at the time. Only Kante seemed a very decent and much needed buy based on his stay at Leicester City. Let’s take a look at these players and see how they’ve performed so far. Credits to Whoscored.

N’GOLO KANTE

NATIONALITY: FRANCE

PREVIOUS CLUB: LEICESTER CITY

POSITION: MIDFELDER – DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER

The petite French national has been a hit at Chelsea. One of the mainstays in the team and has played a significant part in Chelsea topping the league. The player’s tenacity on the pitch has been worrisome to opponents and at the same time been the kind of energy Chelsea need in the midfield. Even his team mate Eden Hazard, came out to applaud his efforts and described him as two men on the pitch. He has been a decent tackler and ball interceptor. Little wonder he emerged as player of the year at the London 2017 football awards.

Has played 26 games in the PL. All starts
2 apps in the FA Cup. All substitutes apps
1 league cup app.
2329 minutes played and 6 yellows garnered in the PL
Has 1 goal to his name, and what a goal it was. He bamboozled Man United’s defence before slotting past Da Gea to round up a 4 nil victory.

MARCOS ALONSO

NATIONALITY: SPAIN

PREVIOUS CLUB: ACF FIORENTINA

POSITION: DEFENDER - FULL BACK

The Spanish defender was one of the low key signings for Chelsea. He was gradually eased into the team and was finally called upon to a take a permanent place in the lineup when Antonio Conte reverted to his famous 3-5-2 formation. Decent in aerial duels, set pieces and interceptions

Has played 22 PL games since then, with 1 substitute appearance
1 league cup appearance
1900 minutes played in the PL and only 1 yellow card to his name. Clean player.
Has contributed 4 goals and 2 assists from his defensive position
1 Man of the match award to his name

DAVID LUIZ

NATIONALITY: BRAZIL

PREVIOUS CLUB: PSG

POSITION: DEFENDER CENTRE BACK

The Brazilian made a shock return to the bridge after a relatively short spell with PSG. He has been one of the key figures in Conte’s 3 man at the back system. Still aggressive as ever, but has really improved and has been less prone to errors under Conte. Another main stay in Chelsea’s defense line since his arrival. A good long range passer of the ball and a decent set piece taker. His tackling has also improved considerably.

23 games in the PL and 2 in the League cup. All starts.
5 yellows to his name
2070 minutes played in the PL
1 man of the match award

MICHY BATSHUAYI

NATIONALITY: BELGIUM

PREVIOUS CLUB: OLYMPIQUE de MARSEILLE

POSITION: ATTACKER – CENTER FORWARD

Touted as another Drogba replacement by some fans, but has struggled to carve a niche for himself in the squad. Started the season as a sub in league games but has struggled to get into the starting line-up. Might be the in-form Costa retarding his shine or might be the Manager’s preference for another attacker, or better still, his performance. A decent finisher. Has to improve on other attacking facets of his game to stand a chance in the line-up.

16 appearances in the PL. All substitute apps. Yet to start a game in the PL
3 starts in the league cup and 2 in the FA cup
1 goal and 1 assist in the PL.
4 goals, 2 each in the league cup and FA cup
A meagre 97 minutes played

We hope the mainstays remain consistent and power Chelsea to the league title with more impressive displays. Meanwhile, Chelsea is 112 today! A HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO CHELSEA. KTBFFH!
