The 81 Division of the Nigeria Army said it had detained six soldiers over the alleged assault of a young woman.

The woman was identified as Ruth Orji in various newspaper reports.

The division said this in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Lt-col. Olaolu Daudu, on Wednesday.

The army issued its statement after the group representing the victim sued the army for #250 million naira damages.

The incident had happened around Odongunyan area of Ikorodu, Lagos, on the 12th of March 2017.

In its statement, the division said the army have “zero tolerance” to brutality and inhumanity and as such it regretted that the incident had happened.
Lt-col Daudu described the incident as “disheartening” and assured that the accused would face the wrath of the law.
