ABUJA-In a country of about 180 million people, only 214 individuals pay their taxes, Federal government lamented on Thursday.
It also regretted that many multinational companies evaded tax payments.
The government also expressed concerned over the growing rate and the effects of deforestation in the country even as it received briefings on the current security situation.

How can you expect that people will pay tax to a government where fantastic corrupticians and budget padders will loot in broad day light and scot free without prosecution or perhaps media prosecution at best!

Thats why the stinkingly corrupt people have issues confirming a lesser "corrupt" warrior from waring against them in the war against corruption!

In the soon to be produced new updated Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary, I think the definition for the word corruption should have pictures of corrupt (politicians) African leaders starting with Nigeria!

Why should anyone pay tax? angry

We are our own Local Govt.

I provide water for myself by sinking a borehole in my yard.

I provide security for myself by contributing to resident association fees to hire local nightwatch men.

I provide electricity for the larger part of 24hrs by running my generators endlessly.

I contribute to have the road that leads up to my house fixed.

I have my mobile phone on me at all times, no phone booth anywhere in the country.

What else do I really need from my government really? I'm self sufficient.

The money I might have paid as tax has gone into buying fuel for my gen.

"If you want to hide anything from the black man, just throw it in a book."

How I wish my countrymen could shame the white supremacists who make the above statement. It is indeed sad that Nigeria has one of the highest concentration of educated people (educated to tertiary level) in the world, yet our education almost amounts to nothing simply because we are just too lazy to read hence we just read titles and then jump into conclusions.

Taking a look at the responses so far in this thread, it is obvious that none of the individuals shouting lie, lie lie!!! spared a second to read the report cos just the FIRST sentence of the main report would have cleared the air. The Op actually knows his country people very well hence he cleverly twisted the report to confuse people and gbam! he succeeded almost 100%. What a shame!

Both the headline and the content of the report posted by the Op are misleading and I suspect the Op did that deliberately to elicit the sort of responses we see on this thread cos in the original report, both the headline and the first sentence are very clear.

Whilst the headline might be misleading, the very first thing I would do when I see weird report like this on nairaland (or even anywhere else) is to open the link to really confirm if Vanguard truly reported the rubbish that the Op put up. But obviously, the crowd on this thread don't think it that way.
