The role of your cylinder head
Cylinder heads need to be robust. They have to withstand huge pressures and very high temperatures, while retaining their shape and form to seal the cylinder block via the head gasket. They’re key to controlling air flow in and out of the cylinders and fuel deployment. The cylinder head also holds the injectors and valves – and contains more moving parts than any other part of the engine. Although largely unnoticed, the cylinder head plays a key role in your engine. It’s a solid item that sits at the top of your unit and covers its workings. It’s sealed in place with the head gasket. The inside of the cylinder head contains a number of passages – known as ports or tracks – and the air mix travels along these to the inlet valves. Other tracks inside the cylinder head are the route by which the exhaust gases travel when leaving the main engine block.
Extreme temperatures
In all engines cooled by water – this applies to all Perkins engines – the cylinder head also contains ducts and passages. The cylinder head houses the largest number of moving parts.These allow the coolant, comprising water and antifreeze, to flow and transfer excess heat away from the main body of the engine to the radiator, preventing the risk of overheating and damage. Not surprisingly, the cylinder head is subjected to extremes of temperature, which it has to resist.
What lies beneath
Beneath the cylinder head lie more moving parts than anywhere else in the engine. These mainly comprise the valves and fuel injectors, calibrated precisely to meet the needs of your engine. Because they’re fixed in position and sealed with the head gasket, cylinder heads don’t suffer the same wear and tear as moving parts of the engine. They need to be replaced relatively rarely.

The regular checks that you need to carry out fall into daily and weekly categories, along with regular servicing and others at various specified intervals. They all have the same aim of ensuring that your engine runs as long as possible at the maximum efficiency. No two schedules are exactly the same, so you should always check the schedule for your particular engine. Every Perkins engine has its own maintenance schedule. It’s also worth noting that the checks either relate to the calendar time or the hours your engine has been running. For point of note, the most common generator sets such as Mikano, FG Wilson, Jubaili, Marapco, Shark, Demba etc all have same engine which is Perkins engine. That implies that they uses same engine parts. Their only different is the name printed on the soundproof. This how that comes to possibility. The named generator brands don't manufacture generator, they only obtain the license or go into trade deal to assemble the parts which they import from Perkins in UK. Perkins Engines are manufacture in UK not Nigeria. So, these companies only construct the soundproof that houses the Perkins engines.
In simple language, Mikano 20 kvA has same engine has 20 kvA FG Wilson, Marapco and the rest.

Today we shall discuss about KNOCKING OF DIESEL ENGINE.
Just like petrol engines, a high-pressure wave set up in compression ignition engine ( Diesel Engine) and this wave strikes the cylinder wall, cylinder head and piston resulting in knock. These knocks are known as “ Diesel Knock ” in automobile engineering.When sudden and violent knock are experienced in a petrol engine , these knocks are termed as “Detonation”.
There are power and efficiency loss along with the rough running of an engine is observed. In severe cases, it may wreck the engine also. A considerable amount of air -fuel mixture may ignite at the same instant and result in a combustion knock or heavy thud rather than pink. While it ends mixture which knocks in the spark ignition engine (petrol engine) it may fairly large part or parts of the mixture, which knock in compression ignition engine.
Diesel Engine Tapping Noise.
Diesel engines are noisy. But when valves and lifters start tapping, or sounding like grandma's old sewing machine, it’s a sure sign your engine is dirty, causing your valve noise problems. To prevent diesel knock, following important methods can be used very effectively . 01) Add 1% of ethyl nitrate or any nitrate to accelerate the combustion of fuel. This process is known as “Doping” and reduce delay period considerably and hence prevent diesel knock. 02) For spontaneous ignition of the fuel, we require much higher temperature this can be achieved by raising the compression ratio. The rate of pressure rise increases resulting in smooth running of the engine. If compression ratio increased in a petrol engine , the engine is more liable to detonate, but in a diesel engine, it reduces the diesel knock. 03) Diesel knock can be reduced by increasing the turbulence of the compressed air injected promotes homogeneous mixture by stripping the fuel from the spray. 04) Arrange the fuel injector in such a way that it should sta rt injecting only a small quantity of fuel in starting of the engine. If we increase the injection pressure, which encourages the atomization of fuel and prevent knock. 05) By raising the temperature of the coolant that of the intake air as well as the cylinder head and combustion chamber. 06) Also By increasing the inlet pressure of air (Supercharging), we can prevent diesel knock. Many times we noted this sudden noise but not aware of the phenomenon behind this. Now above description will clear the doubt about diesel knock in your automotive engine.
