Please help a young man who asked these for my kind advice.

His late Dad had an unlicensed Pistol (gun) and a licensed double barrel before he passed on.
His late father was a politician who didn't take chances when it comes to security matters.
His step mom who lived with his dad before he passed on probably do not have a little ink he had the Pistol (but she knows about the double barrel which he occasionally used for hunting) cos he didn't let her into such secret knowing her very volatile/fearful state (she would pass out knowing there was an unlicensed gun in their room).

His late father's estate had just been shared among his siblings and he would be inheriting his late father's bedroom in the city while his half elder brother would inherit the bedroom in the village but only after the demise of their step mother who doesn't stay in the apartment in the city but currently lives in the one in the village.

The guns may be in either of the bedrooms.

His Concerns now are first;

How would he inform the Police of the presence of these guns without implicating the poor old woman whom may not know anything about its presence.

If he decides to keep quiet and the gun gets into the hands of his cultist elder brother, that definitely would be a menace to everyone around.

How should he go about it without implicating any of his family members?

My friend if you dont want to keep it like Ur dad did quietly over the years then just destroy it , if u can't melt it ..take out the magazine , Unbreech it ..use a screw driver to destroy the safety latch , destroy the spring in the magazine completely with screw driver. then stuff the barrel with melted candle wax mixed with sand ..After u Unbreech you will have three parts the magazine , the breech and the barrel ..Throw all 3 separately in 3 different large body of water like lagoon , river and big Lake or pond ..then come back and thank me

throw it into the lagoon, I know that feeling knowing where the gun in the house is. you might get tempted to shoot it one day.

tell the DPO
wrong advice. It might be loaded, thereby hurting(or killing) him in the process. For those telling him to get a lawyer, that would be expensive and might get complicated in the long run. My advice is this....
Wrap the gun in a cloth, cement bag, strong water proof nylon. Find somewhere hidden in your compound, dig a deep hole and bury it there. You might/will need it someday

It's either u secretly keep like ur father did, that is if u hv the gut.
Or u destroy it and discard in a large body of water.
Or u consult a lawyer on how to go about licensing it.
But instead that it will lead u to temptation in the nearest future, destroy it or handover to the govt after consulting a lawyer for guidance.
But make sure you consult a lawyer that u trust, that will not betray you.
Before going to the lawyer, remove the gun from anywhere it can be possible found by the police in case things turns around.
U may then boldly, deny that u only wanted to make enquiries.
So, even if they come for search in ur house, they will not see anything.

Get a safe place and hide the gun, will come in handy against any of the following -

Fulani herdsmen

One million boys

Armed robbers

Boko haram

Unwanted cultists

And others

Be wise.

You presently do not know where the GUNS are. 1 is legal to own, the other is not. Licenses might be transferable, do a little research.

There is no license for a pistol.

Find a close friend in the armed forces, and tell him about your problem, he can keep the weapons for you, preferably have him destroy the pistol in your presence, then go about finding a license the barrel.

Read the will first to be sure it not part of what your dad left as inheritance.

if it not documented, the you destroy it. Visiting a police station will place you on police watch.

Yes, the young man do not know where the guns are presently but sure they may be in one of the bedrooms. He can't stand holding a gun himself (e no get that kind liver) so he may not be seeking a transfer of license but his worry is what if it gets into the wrong hands before anyone notices
