hello nairalanders, I am paul, a 300level student of university of uyo, department of animal science. I have been on the quest to learn fish breeding and hatching to no avail. I have met some of my lectureers in fishries dept to teach me fish breeding with practicals, some refused and some asking for 400k. I spent some little amount of money to someone but he disapointed me. this quest to learn fish breeding is part of my year resolution, help me actualise my dream. I am based in akwa ibom state and can be reached on 08137352286. thanks to my future teacher and to all nairalanders changing the world. |

Things needed: 1. One female catfish with eggs. 2. One male catfish over 8 months, weighing over 300g 3. Ovaprim, HCG or catfish thyroid gland. 4. Mosquito nets (cut them into 1ft X 1ft) 5. Floaters (old slippers or that white foam used to protect new electronics will do) 6. Saline DIRECTIONS Inject the female catfish with 0.5ml of ovaprim or HCG at the tip of the dorsal fin close to where the skull ends. Do this around 8 hours before sunlight so you don't end up with the fish spilling all the eggs before you wake up. Do not insert the needle too deep into the fish and inject slowly. After 8 hours, hold the fish with the tail pointing downwards. If eggs start trickling out you are ready to spawn. If not, come back every hour but it never exceeds 10 hours if done right. Soon as eggs start trickling, use a bowl to collect them. Gently slide your thumb on the belly of the fish towards the vulva. Stop as soon as eggs stop coming out or you see blood. Set it aside and pick up the male catfish. Use a sharp blade to make an incision from the penis towards the head. You will see the testes. Bring them out carefully. Put them on a saucer and use the blade to cut them to release the sperm inside. Add a little saline to increase the quantity. Fill a big basin with water and arrange the mosquito nets on each other in the basin. Pour the sperm and saline mixture in the bowl of eggs and mix carefully with a spoon. Carefully spread the eggs on the nets and soon as they come in contact with water the sperm will be activated and the fertilised eggs will stick to the nets. Remove the uppermost net and place it in your hatching pond using the floaters to keep it up but not out of the water. Spread more eggs on the next net and also put it in the pond. Continue till all eggs have been spread. Cover the pond with tarpaulin and wait for around 4 hours. If too many of the eggs turn white you need to remove them. If all are white, something went wrong. If most appear normal, come back in 2o hours and you should see the eggs hatching. Start running water into the pond while letting it run out at an equal pace to keep the water fresh. Ehhhhhh...... I will continue later. I don tire. paullo240: 1 Like 1 Share |

paullo240: I am in Lagos so that is not possible. I can however guarantee you that if you call 2 other people and join hands together you will succeed. The process is not as difficult as all those idi0ts selling manuals make it look. Catfish will usually stay still if you cover their eyes with a damp towel. Get a small sized female fish for a start because if you are the lucky type you can get 90% hatch rate. It is how to care for them that is the problem. I will modify my previous post soon to add some more details. No FEAR!!!! |
