The position of the law for the offences of aiding and attempting suicide under the Criminal and Penal code Jurisdictions in Nigeria.
------------------------------------------
As we all know, suicide is the act of a person taking his own life willingly, the good thing is that it is criminalized under the criminal code in the south and penal code in the north.

Also, the law contemplates an instance where a person may aid another person in committing suicide . The person who aids such act is usually lucky to be awarded a fair punishment. Under the Penal Code, if a person under the age of 18 is successfully aided to commit suicide, if successfully proved, he shall be punished with death. This particular section also covers insane people, an idiot, or anybody that has been intoxicated(see section 227 Penal Code). This section tries to protect people who are not responsible for their actions due to age or an infirm mind. Also, for those who are responsible for their actions, anyone who aids them to commit suicide shall also be imprisoned for as long as 10years and shall be liable to fine also. (see section 228 Penal Code). Also if a person attempts to commit suicide and he fails in such inglorious act, he May be imprisoned for up to a year, and may have the option of fine.(see section 231 Penal Code).

Furthermore, under the Criminal Code which is applicable to the south, the offence of aiding suicide doesn't discriminate on whether or not the victim was in full control of his mind, or was under the statutory age of criminal culpability. The punishment is fair because he is entitled to life imprisonment.(see section 326 Criminal Code). Also, the award for attempting suicide is that he will be liable to imprisonment for 1 year.(section 327 Criminal Code).
It is noteworthy that in the north, the offender may be liable to fine even with the sentence except it involves a child or an insane person. But in the south, the case is totally different because the offender is not given the option of fine.

In conclusion, the position of the law in the north and south are similar in that they both frown at the commission or aiding suicide. The reason is that in every good law, there Is usually an element of morality, no matter how little it is.
