Football has become more than a game, it has brought Nigerians together, it Brought unity among lovers of Football. It is no longer news that Nigerian youths engaged in sports betting for source of income.
Sports betting is said to have started in North America and parts of Europe. It is described as the activity of producing sports results to win a sum of amount of money.
According to Bellanaija.com, Nigerian youths spend over N1.8 billion Daily to sports betting, more Nigerians youths especially; undergraduate students, unemployed and secondary students. They patronized sports betting companies by placing a sum of money to bet for their favorite team and others.
Many football fans who support their teams for free, now believe that they can make a fortune from predicting scores, match results and others. Football and other games such as dog racing, horse racing, Car racing and NBA basketball etc. are played almost on daily bases in Europe and other parts of the world and Nigerian Youths place bets on them.
On Match-days, viewing centers in the country are usually full with passionate fans watching their favourite team and football fans log in to Livescores.com, check match results and live scores and matches. They usually holding a white piece of paper popular known as ‘ticket’, the “ticket” are printed copies of selected games on which bets are place and an amount of money for potential winnings.
In less than a decade, the sport betting industry has witness success and massive growth. In sport betting, you can bet with a minimum of N100 and win a large amount of money. All you have to do is to select the team that will win, draw or number of goals scored in the match and you can place your bet through your mobile and a code will be given to you, you then go to a close betting shop and the cashier will print a paper for you showing the games you place your bet and potential winnings.
Some Undergraduate students in tertiary institutions stake their savings as well as their school fees and in the process, deny their welfare in school. The rush is increasing but sport betting is addictive because the same students who lost will return the next day to bet, believing to recover the lost money while other students that won will return to play for more money.
Most Nigerian especially unemployed youths believed sports betting have become a means of making money. Since there is high rate of unemployment in the country, some youths have turned betting shops to their normal place as they would gather as early as 8am as from 3pm,6pm,8:45pm.
Watching and following football matches are longer just to while away recreational time as a late winning goal scored in a football match is meal.
Employment issues, the rate of poverty and economic recession in the country mean that the chance to earn a living from sports betting can hardly be ignored. According to reports, 60% of population lived in absolute poverty, an average Nigerian live below the poverty line of $1 a day and any activity that can turn a small amount of money into large sums will always be appealing.
Since the beginning of the sports betting industry, there have been competition in the industry with emerged of many sports betting companies like Nairabet, saharabet, Bet9ja, 1960Bet and so many others.
If you have been to a sports betting viewing Centre or have been to a sports betting shop, you will agree with me that sports betting is gradually eating deep into the minds of our youth that they are beginning to see it as ‘Business as usual’. This trend of ‘I want to make money’ has affected the mind of the youths.
Naij.com posted a shocking story some years back about a shop betting, where a guy name Shina who won the sum of N3 million via football prediction. He decided to buy a Benz car which cost him N1.8Million. But unfortunately, he kisses the dust (Die).
It was reported that Shina took his friends to a beer parlor where they all got drunk and on their way home, they had an accident in which only a lady survived among the six people inside the car. The saddest part of story is that Shina is the only child of his parents.
The danger of sports betting is more than its advantages, because betting is structured in a way that if you win, you will be tempted again to bet more and by so doing, you have lost all you earn.
My advice to those involved is Sports Betting should quit, because when you started Betting. It becomes addictive and difficult to stop. The youth in the country, ‘should think outside the box’ and be industrious for the betterment of the society and the country.

Very bad write-up that makes no sense. People are making money by betting the OP is here doing copy and paste.

Betting is a business and the stakers are not fools.

You need to visit a mine and search for diamond or gold then you will know that nothing comes easy.

This Op's reasoning though.
Just painted the whole thing black. If you choose to get addicted that's your business, someone won three million, squandered it on a car and died subsequently, so?. What of those who won, made good use of it and didn't die?. Death is a normal thing so just stop attaching it to something else.

If you let greed rule you, you won't go far, but also he who Dares Wins!. Bet wisely.
