True there is a hype but we must start by creating a market and the gap will be quickly filled. Look at rice we all know the investments gone into rice because of the ban. I am sire that in two planting cycles the price will reduce due to availability. I personally know two educated guys who are currently into tomatoes farming at the moment. We will get there. signz: |

Oildichotomy: And what is the industrial capacity of Nigeria. Was it not in these same difficult circumstances that dangote made his wealth as an industrialist , Innoson produces motor vehicles in this same economic environment , we have oil exploration companies in the SS and many Indian owned manufacturing companies in Ogun state. I am a mechanical /manufacturing engineer by profession you can't bullshit me with that industrial limitations nonsense , what is lacking is a sense of purpose determination and laziness. Most people would rather make a small importing finished goods than to establish a manufacturing unit for same product with the potential for greater gain in the future having taken a great risk. Yes the conditions are tough and it is emotionally tasking but if there is pride in one's effort it is possible If it was so impossible why is Dangote establishing a tomato paste processing plant ! 1 Like 1 Share |

jjbest123: FYI Nigeria used to produce tin tomato before , we had VEGFRU and TOMAPEP, they were good brands, better than the poison we currently import. Support the growth of local industries thats the only for forward. 2 Likes |

sweetgala:If you are smart enough, you would have understood that the balderdash of laziness you put up there cannot be used to describe a Nigerian. We have all these qualities, hence we have made it this far considering the harsh conditions we found ourselves as a nation. Using Dangote as an illustration to buttress your determination Trash shows you are practically living in some fools paradise of some sort |

Re: FG Bans Importation Of Packaged Tomato Paste by obailala(m): 2:03pm On Mar 28, 2017 |
Oildichotomy:Be patient... Nigeria will never be a producer of tomato paste if we continue to encourage importation of cheap china tomato. Today Nigeria is a net exporter of cement; that wouldn't have been possible if importation of cement wasnt discouraged with similar policies like this one. Also, Nigeria's rice production is on a steady increase and we may hit self sufficiency very soon if the tempo is maintained. We would also not have made 10% of the current progress made in local rice production if similar policies like this weren't made. You have to learn to crawl before you think of walking. China where we run to to import everything, go and take a look at how China got to it's present position; it was certainly not by importing everything or waiting for the 'right time' before making hard decisions. |

SalamRushdie: Do you know that Nigeria is 14th largest producer of tomatoes in the world and the largest in Sub-Sahara Africa? Do you even know that out of the 1.5 million tonnes of fresh tomatoes Nigerian farmers produce annually 900,000 tonnes is lost to rot? Do you know that Dangote Tomato Factory in Kano alone can produce 430,000 tonnes of Tomato paste annually? Add Erisco. Add Sonia. Add others I don't even know about. Don't be all about glooms and disasters. Be hopeful, after all this only mean Nigeria is moving towards self-sufficiency in tomato paste as we are moving in rice and wheat. 2 Likes 1 Share |

sweetgala: You my friend , are not far from the kingdom of god U see further than most , it always amazes me how people do not see the obvious opportunities in manufacturing Yes its long term ,but gain is sure especially in a developing economy despite all the infrastructure challenges ,I concluded a long time ago Nigerians are not willing to have long term investment, they want the quick gains of importation ,buying and selling ,and this is the reason Indians ,Lebanese and of recent Chinese are dominating and investing more in that sector .we have been in that sector for close to 30 years I run 3 factories ,been using 1000 to 1200 liters of diesel a day powering 3 genenators and several boilers the past 3 or 4 weeks ,been a major fault in the town we are located ,all this are challenging no doubt but they will be overcome, and u know what ? In all those factories we have expansion work going on and even building new ones And by the way i pray u get capital to start some thing ,no matter how small ,I like ur spirit ,people give excuses for everything 1 Like |

Oildichotomy: What other explanation can confirm the quick wealth and desire of every business man to cut corners. Dangote is not the only industrialist in Nigeria, many are going through tough times but they persist I also mentioned Innoson who despite being the only indigenous auto manufacturer in Nigeria has not been able to establish a reasonable market share after these many years , there are many companies like pro force and the many in the south east We can revive the industry lost in these lands if only we are determined |

obailala:You are not getting the point do you? The much touted cement sufficiency is practically monopolised. Not that the cement and the value chain created is better off anyways. Get this though, I never said I'm against ban but I say it is highly inhuman for a supposed progressive government to gag it's citizens with harsh policies almost in quick succession. Exactly my point, learn to crawl before you walk you said i.e make the environment non-hostile to investments and business and the ban soiree can come in |

Oildichotomy:Nigeria's business climate has always been hostile, and will continue to be unfavourable for a long time until certain basic amenities are fixed. Lack of Power for instance is the biggest single hinderance to doing business in Nigeria and this contributes up to 50% of production costs. Power isnt something you can fix in a day, and you can't really say you expect the nation to remain stagnant until it fixes power. Talking of cement being monopolised, there's a statement that "great people became great when their peers were sleeping." How exactly did dangote monopolise the cement market?... What were other investors doing?... they were obviously busy enjoying the larger profits they made from importing... or I'm sure you will say Aliko gets preferential treatment from govt?... How exactly does just one man get preferential treatment from every single govt in the last 15-20 years? The govt announced this plan to ban tomato paste imports over 2 years ago, but apparently, only Dangote and Erisco took that warning serious. When they start raking in monopolised mega profits, people will begin to cry 'monopoly' again. And this is exactly the same way the govt has been begging investors to build private refineries, but it seems all our 'big men' just prefer importing fuel from their overseas refineries instead of setting up refineries in Nigeria. Very soon the same ol' Dangote will monopolise that sector and the 'monopoly' wailings will go louder again. Dangotes refinery will be completed in 2019, but it could take roughly a year to set up a modular refinery. Now is the time for other investors to grab the opportunity, but instead, they still prefer to sleep whilst enjoying the profits of importing fuel; until 2019 and then Dangote again snatches the entire market share, govt withdraws import licenses, and Nigerians again begin to shout 'monopoly.' |

Buhari's policies re usually anti masses. Infrastructure is zero. Buhari cannot even receive treatment in his own country. It is petroleum and its allied products that depletes our Dollar reserve not tomato paste. |

Oildichotomy: Be here and be ranting, so the government should not stimulate the manufacturing sector because the power supply is not stable? You can as well say all the companies in the country should be shut down until there is stable power supply. I wonder what you mean by 'necessary infrastructures' you should have listed them. |

Macgabe: I would have ignore your comment but I'm giving you the benefit of doubt that you don't understand my question to you. So, let me break it down to you: You claimed that Nigerian indigenous manufacturer of Tomato Paste can't satisfy the demand in Nigeria. So, I asked you: 1. what is the value of the aggregate demand for Tomato Paste in the country? 2. What is the sum of the capacities of Dangote, Erisco, Sonia and other indigenous manufacturers? 3. What's the value of the shortfall that made you to conclude that Nigerian manufacturers can't meet Nigerians demand for Tomato Paste? They are simple questions you could easily answer as you claimed to be knowledgeable. Enlighten me please. That's not too much to ask, or is it? |
