You need a balance of both... A degree gives you underlying knowledge whilst certificates are a confirmation of your competency in a specified field. 18 Likes 1 Share |

You know how some companies can be with their, must be a graduate and completed NYSC with 5 years experience. So to be safe, have your degree. The certification gives you an edge. Please I have a cousin looking for an IT security entry position. Please if you know of any openings, PM me 5 Likes |

Get certificates, work on projects when you can and build up experience. Most of the best programmers are self taught. 1 Like |

This topic must have made front page at least 7 times or so. Well you actually need both. Your degree is more like a basic foundation in the IT field while your certifications are structures and add-ons. In Nigeria especially, they are usually more detailed in terms of practical content. |

You actually need both - one gives you the theoretical foundation whilst the other certifies the practical understanding. Refer to the quoted response below and you would understand why both is needed. Kaeyzo: 1 Like |

In this terrain, a degree may be a prerequisite to certification. In other words, the certification may only have enough weight if backed by your degree. #NigerianFactor 1 Like |

Re: Certification Or Degree? by aikyg(m): 7:51am On Mar 30, 2017 |
Degree is always better in IT. It shows that you are disciplined enough to go through a five year academic exercise. One major thing people learn in the university is how to solve problems. That's why you spend five years reading books, writing quizzes/exams and executing projects. Get a degree, it is very important. 1 Like |
Re: Certification Or Degree? by Qyubee(m): 7:51am On Mar 30, 2017 |
Both...if u're new in the industry, i'm assuming u have a bsc already, then get a few certifications (cisco, microsoft or whatever). Upon getting a few positions in ur chosen field, u can then add more academic qualifications to it....skills are very important too! |
Re: Certification Or Degree? by mmsen: 7:54am On Mar 30, 2017 |
aikyg: You don't learn how to solve problems by sitting through lectures or classes, you learn by doing. If I'm looking for a programmer I'm looking to see past projects not how much time you spent sat in class. 5 Likes 1 Share |
