Military rule vs democracy in South East and Igboland since 1999 by myplaydiary: 8:41pm On Mar 29, 2017 |
While it is correct to say that Ndigbo are being marginalized in Nigeria and deprived of basic amenities and federal infrastructural development since the 70's, it is also correct to say that the government of the day and previous government administrations both military and civil have ensured the sustenance of the political, industrial and economic emasculation of Ndigbo through several policies, deprivations and economic blockade targeted at South East and Ndigbo in general. During the military administration Ndigbo were under the worst kind of leadership as we never had Igbo military administrators rather we had administrative officers that were bent on riding Igboland deep into the mud to ensure total stagnation or outright death of growth or development. This saw everything in Igboland crippled to a dysfunctional state that ensured a total collapse of the region from security, education, welfare, commerce, industry, health, wealth, infrastructure etc. This saw to the mass exodus of Ndigbo from SE and Igboland. The current attempt by the present administration to stagnate the SE by militarizing the SE under the guise of insurgency with it current operation Python dance is evidence and attestation to the injustice against Ndigbo. It is not news that during the military administrations the SE had the highest crime rate even when it had the highest number of armed personnels from the Army, Navy, Police, Civil defense etc, littering the whole place and making life even more unbearable for the residents and natives of the region. The SE also had the highest unemployment rate, mass exodus, least industry, infrastructure, development etc, Life in the SE and Igboland was a misery and one that none wished to remember, we all know the state of federal roads leading to the SE there were all death traps to ensure the least economic or human activity in the region and to ensure gross failure of the region known as South east. However with the advent of the civil rule in 1999 the story is different, Ndigbo had some form of liberation and freedom that in fact is cause for celebration, looking back at Igboland of yesteryears and Igboland of today and the crop of leaders that have been produced we cannot but appreciate democracy and be thankful to God for it sustenance we now have some level of control over our lives and not depending on military proxy leaders to make our lives more miserable as the years go-bye today we have leaders who have made some marks in Igboland and brought about development and change, the likes of DSP Ike Ekweremadu, Puis Anyim Puis, Peter Obi, Rochas Okorocha, Willie Obiano and the likes. It is in this view that we can now begin to appreciate and understand the blessings that have come to SE in the guise of a democratic rule of governance that have been in place in the country since 1999. This system of government even with its limitations has still managed to yield enormous positive fruits for the South East and Ndigbo at large this goes to show the importance of a fiscal or true federalism and resource control or even total control one cannot over emphasized the kind of industrial and investment revolution that will come with an independent Igboland. Current UN statistics and relevant data bodies shows SE top in Education, Security, Health Index, Wealth Index, Commerce, Indigenous Industry etc just imagine a federal Igboland. However the South east still suffers from Infrastructural development, industrial and economic blockade from the federal government but still maintain some control on the state level which have seen to growth and development in the SE Anyone who have been to the SE pre 1999 and post 1999 cannot fail to realize how much improvement there have been over these years as a result of the democratic rule that have been sustained, even Ebonyi now tops many states in every region of the country in terms of Education, health, wealth, industry, Security etc. This goes to show that the SE have leaped in bounds in terms of development and welfare, hopefully we know this can only get better and can only be best if we have our fate in our own hands, but so far democracy have ensured that we are not proxy puns via military rule. |
