Thousands of prospective university students yesterday blocked the popular Mary Slessor Roundabout in Calabar to protest stressful nature of the ongoing registration exercise by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). The prospective candidates, who expressed misgivings at the way the process was being handled by the board, said despite assurances by JAMB that everyone would be registered before the expiration of the deadline for the registration; the slow and stressful manner of the exercise did not support that position. The protest took them from the Mary Slessor Roundabout through Barracks Road and ended up at JAMB’s office located at 100 Marian Road. The presence of the police and other security agencies, who kept their eyes on the protesters, however, restrained them from going out of control. Speaking with New Telegraph, one of the protesters, who did not want his name in print, condemned the process, describing it as slow, stressful and frosting. According to him, “to register, you first had to create a profile withJAMB using an email address. Then JAMB would send a confirmation to the email address and you now click on the link provided. JAMB will then send you to its portal and from there you create a profile which you would print out and do a remittal before you take it to the bank to pay N700.
