Fire fighters and sympathisers at the scene
There was tragedy yesterday in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, as the popular Aleshinloye Market was razed, destroying goods worth millions of naira.

Many of the affected traders were seen weeping, just as hundreds of shop owners rushed to their shops where they hurriedly evacuated their goods.

The fire, which started at about 4.30pm, according to eyewitness’ account, razed about 10 shops where shoes, textile materials, and jewelries were sold.

It was gathered that the fire service station within the market could not put out the fire because of lack of equipment.

However, the fire service from the state secretariat saved the day.

The source of the inferno could not be ascertained at press time, but it was gathered that it might have been caused by a generator.

Traders dealing in textile materials, ready-made dresses and jewelries were said to have been worst hit.

One of the affected traders, who pleaded for anonymity, described the inferno as a disaster.

She commended the efforts of the Fire Service for their timely response which she said helped in putting out the fire.

She said the traders should thank God that the incident happened in the day, saying it would have been terrible if it happened at night.

She called on the state government to compensate the traders.[/b]
