Varsity Students Protest FG’s Plan To Scrap College Of Management Sciences By Hembadoon Orsar, Makurdi Students of the Federal University of Agriculture Makurdi in their hundreds in the early hours of yesterday protested over the recent decision by the minister for education, Adamu Adamu on the scrapping of college of management sciences from all the federal universities of Agriculture across the country. Addressing the angry students who covered the major road from north bank where the university is located causing serious traffic gridlock on the road, the vice chancellor of the university, Prof. Emmanuel Kucha appealed to the students to be calm as they were already making plans to meet with the federal government over the matter. Prof Kucha who expressed dismay over the decision of the federal government noted that if the college of management sciences was scrapped so many lecturers would be affected as well as students. He said he was in total support of the students in saying no to the decision by the minister for education as there can’t be university of agriculture without college of management sciences adding that no one can be successful in agriculture without good management background. Also addressing the students, the dean of college of management Sciences, Prof Fidelis Ayatse, called on the students to be calm as plans were underway to tackle the issue. A 300 hundred level student of biochemistry department, David pine who is the vice president, Students’ Union government appealed to the federal government to reconsider its decision, saying that the college of management sciences is beneficial to the university in many ways. A 400 level student of Accounting, Mr Okpe Ikechukwu who spoke to our correspondent described the decision by the Hon minister as worrisome and sad adding that it was the same federal government through the National Universities Commission that gave approval for the university to have a college of management sciences, so why turning round to frustrate the students and lecturers of the college. |
