Nigeria striker Obafemi Martins has been included in his country's 23 man team for this month's Africa Cup of Nations. Coach Shaibu Amodu had delayed naming his final squad while Martins' fitness was assessed. Martins, who plays for Wolfsburg in the German Bundesliga, recently had surgery on a shin injury. It means Hoffenheim striker Chinedu Obasi is the player dropped from Coach Amodu's final list of players. Joseph Yobo, Danny Shittu and Yusuf Mohammed who are also recovering from long-term injuries are in the team too. They join Portsmouth striker Nwankwo Kanu who is set to make his sixth appearance at the biennial tournament. Nigeria is going to Angola with a team made up completely of foreign based players. The Super Eagles begin their Group C campaign against defending champions Egypt on 12 January before taking on Benin and then Mozambique. Nigeria's squad list: Goalkeepers: Vincent Enyeama (Hapoel Tel Aviv, Israel) Bamidele Aiyenugba (Bnei Yehuda, Israel) Austin Ejide (unattached) Defenders: Joseph Yobo (Everton, England), Danny Shittu (Bolton, England) , Obinna Nwaneri and Yusuf Mohammed (both FC Sion, Switzerland) Taye Taiwo (Marseille, France) Elderson Echiejile (Rennes, France), Chidi Odiah (CSKA Moscow, Russia), Onyekachi Apam (Nice, France). Midfielders: Nwankwo Kanu (Portsmouth, England), John Mikel Obi (Chelsea, England), Dickson Etuhu (Fulham, England) Sani Kaita (Lokomotiv Moscow, Russia) Yusuf Atanda Ayila (Dynamo Kiev, Ukraine), Oluwaseyi George Olofinjana (Hull City, England), Kalu Uche (Almeria, Spain). Strikers: Yakubu Aiyegbeni (Everton, England), Osaze Odemwingie (Lokomotiv Moscow, Russia), Michael Eneramo (Esperance, Tunisia), Obinna Nsofor (Malaga, Spain), Obafemi Martins (Wolfsburg, Germany). http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/africa/8437351.stm |

Martins OK as an injured Martins is better than enaramo and Yak (after all he was injured during the Kenyan match yet he got us the goals that gave us the ticket. Obasi is potential the the man super eagles need to add pace to the attack from the wings (although he dissappointed in the match with Tunisia). Obasi should have remained while kaita or Nwaneri leaves. |

So I guess this is the line up we will be seeing in action: 1. Enyeama 21.Odiah 2.Yobo(c) 5.Nwaneri 16.Echiejile 13.Ayila 10.Mikel 14.Olofinjana 11.Odemwingie 8.Aiyegbeni 9.Martins Subs: 12.Ejide, 23.Aiyenugba; 6.Shittu, 15.Apam, 22.Mohammed, 3.Taiwo; 17.Kaita; 20.Etuhu 7.Uche, 4.Kanu; 19.Eneramo, 18.Nsofor. My pick 1. Enyeama 21.Odiah 2.Yobo(c) 15.Apam 3.Taiwo 11.Odemwingie 13.Ayila 10.Mikel 18.Nsofor 9.Martins 8.Aiyegbeni |

For SA 2010, all things remaining equal (no injuries), my final 23 would include: - Ike Uche instead of Kanu (he'll be an honorary member of the technical staff) - Obasi instead of Eneramo - Adeleye instead of Nwaneri - S. Sodje instead of Shittu - Olubayo instead of Yusuf Mohammed - Lukman Haruna instead of Etuhu My real issue is with our midfield. I don't know who else could be a vital addition to the current team. . . Ibrahim is not mature yet and the good midfielders of the U-17/20 teams are not experienced on an international level. What do you guys think? |

This is serious. Ogbuke not making the list and Eneramo making it. I'm afraid. |

OBASI HAS BEEN INCLUDED TO THE FINAL TEAM GOING TO ANGOLA!! True story. Look at the list of all the 23 players of each of the 16 participating countries: http://www.cafonline.com/userfiles/file/press-releases/countries-receivedengpdf-1262606125.pdf Nigeria list starts on page 34 over 40. This means Eneramo was dropped and Nigeria's list of 23 has player who are all based in Europe (except Ejide who is unattached). |
