Geology Geology is the study of Earth’s geological properties and characteristics. Through the study of the Earth's structure, material composition, development history, physical and chemical properties of soils and rocks, mineral compositions, rock layers and contacts, and development history, geologists can help to develop theories/applications about the history of Earth’s evolution, climate change history, occurrence of minerals, environmental impacts of human activities and geotechnical engineering, etc. Geophysics In geophysics, physical methods and principles are used to study the Earth's formation and dynamics. The study also includes the Earth's hydrosphere and atmosphere. Geophysicists study geological phenomena, the Earth's interior temperature distribution; the origin of the magnetic field, and large-scale crustal features, such as fracture, continental and oceanic ridges. Modern geophysical research extends beyond Earth's atmosphere (e.g.,ionospheric dynamo, auroral electrojets, and the magnetopause current system), and even extends to other planets and their satellites. A few popular branches of geophysics include seismology, meteorology, hydrology and physical oceanography. Geophysics involves using physical theories and measurements to determine the earth's properties. The major applications of geophysics are oil, gas and mineral explorations. Geophysical applications are also found in many environmental and engineering studies. |

Geology and geophysics In common Both geologists and geophysicists study the Earth and share many duties. They gather and analyze information about the Earth materials and then interpret the results. To manifest their interpretation, they often prepare maps, charts and diagrams to help explain the results. Differences between geology and geophysics While geologists usually study the Earth through direct observation in the field and analysis of soil/rock samples, geophysicists emphasize on using physical principles to study the Earth’s materials and structures, usually in quantitative ways involving mathematical modelings. By gathering the data with passive methods (e.g., gravity, magnetic, or Earthquake waves) or active methods with artificial sources (e.g., explosive seismic waves and artificial electromagetic sources), geophysicists use mathematical models to infer the structure and components of the Earth. A geophysicist needs to know geology, but also needs to be good at math and physics. In the study of the Earth’s shallow portion, especially the Earth’s crust, geologists and geophysicists often work together because of their different emphases. Geologists can provide direct and accurate information, but often in a “dotted” pattern, while geophysicists can provide information in large scales with line/area patterns, but usually with estimation/assumptions and with less resolution/accuracy. Since we don’t have direct access to the Earth’s interior (especially the core and the mantle), geophysics is the primary method to study this part of the Earth. |

Careers Geologists and geophysicists work in a variety of settings. Interestingly, both groups find great careers in natural resource explorations, especially in oil, gas and mineral explorations. They also work in consulting companies, government agencies, non-profit organizations, and universities. Geologists working in environmental consulting companies usually have lower pay rate than those working in natural resource exploration companies. The work for geologists and geophysicists often requires field trips at least part of the time. Physical fitness is often required for such jobs. Although geologists also use computers in this modern time, geophysicists are often required to be more computer literate for complex data processing. 1 Like |

Geology is arguably the hardest and toughest course in OAU thanks to the lecturers who are just so stingy when it comes to marking, followed by Biochemistry |
