Disturbed by an alleged attempt to blow up a flight carrying 300 passengers in the United States of America (USA) last week, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in Abuja, on Friday, disclosed that it was ready to fight terrorism and support the US government and other peace-loving members of the international community in their bid to fight against global terrorism. It will be recalled that there was a botched bombing of a Detroit, Michigan-bound Delta Airline Plane (Flight 253) on the last Christmas day by a 23-year-old Nigerian, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab. The National President of the students’ body, Mr. Jude Imagwe, in a statement made available to newsmen, declared that “NANS promises to maintain a strong relationship with the United States and all loving nations in the international community in the fight against global terrorism.” According to him, “we condemn, in strong terms, the attempt by Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab to blow up Flight 253 with an explosive device at the Detroit, Michigan, USA Airport, on December 25, 2009, a time when all peace-loving Nigerians were celebrating the Christmas festival. “Records are there to show that Nigerian students in the diaspora have maintained a high level of discipline, respect for rules and regulations provided upon admission into foreign institutions and, above all, they have distinguished themselves in character and learning, thus placing them in several institutions as among the best graduating students. “We, therefore, say that Nigeria is not a breeding ground for terrorism in any form or description; Nigerians, particularly students, are not adherents of any terrorism group,” he said. http://www.tribune.com.ng/02012010/news/news8.html |
