“Nigeria is on fire…the North is on fire. Nigeria is becoming like Somalia. The Somalianisation of Nigeria is taking place right now. I am an optimist as far as Nigeria is concerned…but in the last two months, I began to wonder, our house in on fire. We have to sit down and face the truth, get to the roots of our problem and find a solution to this problem. Our house (the north) is on fire. Those of us who call ourselves northerners, our house is on fire…let us not deceive ourselves. Let’s tell ourselves the truth and find solution to our problem. - General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma(Former Minister of Defence, Nigeria), www.channelstv.com.

General Danjuma, spoke those words in 2012. The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, recently his own version of that narrative, thus indicating that little has changed since then. The nation is ceaselessly calling for foreign investors, who seem to be wary of our environment. They probably know they cannot escape, diesel and diesel generators, ransom to kidnappers, and bribes at every turn.

Is Nigeria better than Somalia, power-wise, infrastructure-wise, health-wise, security-wise, etc. The Abuja International airport was reopened 2 days ago after several weeks of closure, and Ethiopian Airlines was the first to land its aircraft there. This is the same Ethiopia that cries to the world for help whenever drought comes calling. Even Rwanda has a functional airline and some Nigerian commercial banks, operate there.

Two weeks ago, I had to travel to Jos. It is a journey that could take up to 16 hours, inclusive of time spent at military check-points, in Plateau State. This time I did not get there until the following day. We had to spend the night in Abuja, so as not to run into the Bororos, on the roads in Nasarawa State. We did not have the privilege of being escorted by policemen, like the airline passengers, going from Kaduna to Abuja, and vice-versa. It was known that there are security challenges on that road(Kaduna - Abuja), but it was not addressed until, a special class of people, had to use it. Just today, it was reported that, the “degraded” Boko Haram got the better of soldiers, and there were fatalities.
Is Somalia reporting, meningitis? Is Somalia reporting, polio or lasssa fever? Nigeria and Somalia, what is different?
