Toyota Camry 99 V6: Smokes And Jerkes, Pls Help. by seal777(m): 8:41am On Jan 04, 2010 |
My toyota camry 99 v6 smokes, it doesnt smoke at the start of the engine, steams well without smoke but the smoke comes when u accelerate. It consumes A LITTLE more fuel to my view. When i start the car and steam it, it moves well but after some time, it jarks at the initial acceleration but balances up when u re on speed. My mechanic recommend me to change two things: 1. the brain box ( to stop the smoke) 2. the fuel pump ( to stop the jarking). Please, advice before i take the wrong step. |

Don't change anything yet - your mechanich doesn't know what's wrong, and is just guessing. Replacing parts at random can work out quite expensive. I'm off to work now, but will post up suggestions later on when I get home. |

@Poster Do not go wasting your hard earned money, Most nigerian mechanics are'nt too clued up on V6 engines anyway. Be patient and wait for sienna to get back to you. |

Bro i greet u@siena, Congrats on winning best poster of the year, U too much, @poster, Fuel pump kor brain box ni, dnt mind the thief, For the jerking part it can mean:1 your petrol tank is dirty 2.The injector is blocked by dirt, Go to a good filing station lyk mobil in awolowo rd (if u are in lagos), they have a machine they will use a sp machine to unblock the injector, It wont cost u 2much you can back dat up with fuel treatment, For the smoking part, hmmmm does the engine consume lots of engine oil?Awaitin your resp |
Re: Toyota Camry 99 V6: Smokes And Jerkes, Pls Help. by seal777(m): 3:14pm On Jan 04, 2010 |
@Calabaman thanks for you response. As for the jerking, u re the second person to observe the fuel tank been dirty. The oil level is very stable and there is no oil element in the exhaust, just that the smoke comes on acceleration and u can see it on the outer part of the exhaust when u touch it. |
Re: Toyota Camry 99 V6: Smokes And Jerkes, Pls Help. by sultaan(m): 10:14pm On Jan 04, 2010 |
First mistake most car owners make that I noticed last time I was in Naija was that they use the wrong oil weight. You should be using 5w-30, or 10w-30, most used 20w-50 When was the last time you canged iol and filter? As for smoke, and jerks, pull the DTC, I know your check engine light is on. It will tell you which cylinder is misfiring, probably caused by dirty fuel injector dumping fuel in your cylinder, and carbon build up on spark plugs. If you can get a place where they clean injectors, try Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner, and clean plugs. |
Re: Toyota Camry 99 V6: Smokes And Jerkes, Pls Help. by gabrieli(m): 10:55pm On Jan 04, 2010 |
@ poster All the above advice had actually spoken my mind, but in addition based on experience with 99 model too, though 4 cylinders, : do a scan which may say something about cylinder(s) misfiring and other things. this will direct ur mechanic on what to do, probably to flush or clean the fuel line{nozzles}. The last and only time i experienced such things, my mech did a scan and cleaned the nozzles, he did not change any part. Ensure u are using a mechanic that has scanners and also understands its usage. There is no point scanning somewhere else and then do repair in another place. If u are around ikeja axis i can direct u to my mech if u dont mind. |

If the smoke your car emits is bluish-white, it'll be burning oil. Two things will make a car burn oil - worn piston rings / bores, or worn valve stem seals. The fact the car smokes on start-up, clears, then occurs again when you accelerate, I would suspect valve-stem seals. When the stem seals harden, they no longer grip the valve stems, allowing oil to run down the stems, and into the combustion chambers. This is then expelled upon start-up as blue smoke, it will clear. But, when you pull away, with your foot hard on the gas pedal, oil will be drawn back down the stems. If this is the problem, you have 24 of these to replace. Usually, replacement requires both cylinder heads to be removed, which of course will mean new head gaskets and bolts. If your mechanic is good, he should be able to replace the valve stem seals with the cylinder head in situ. I seldom remove cylinder heads to replace valve stem seals, unless the head gaskets themselves were tired, and needed replacement too. Before going this route, another area to check would be the crank case breather. If it's clogged with carbonised oil, there will be excessive pressure built up in the crank case (engine) which will then force oil mist into the intake manifold, via the cylinder head / rocker covers. There's usually a filter built into these breathers, in the form of a wire gauze. Your mechanic should be able to remove the gauze, and give it a good clean. All associated hoses and pipes should be cleaned out too. The jerking issue may be unrelated - or it could be there's oil diluting the petrol, causing a lean mixture. Or, it could well be dirty injectors. Injectors need to have a defined spray pattern, if the fuel's coming out of the nozzles in a stream, the cylinder/s affected will run rough, due to an incorrect mixture, causing partial combustion. It's also worth having the ignition coils checked - you may have one coil per cylinder, 6 in total, or one coil per 2 cylinders, 3 in total. These will show up on a scan as "random / multiple missfire detected on cylinder" 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6, or a combination of two or more cylinders. Another way to determine which cylinders have partial combustion (albeit a crude one) is to remove the spak plugs, and check their colour / condition. They should be an even dry and light-brown colour, showing they are in cylinders with a good burn-rate. If any plugs look wet and / or black, the cylinders they were removed from should be investigated further. A compression test should be carried out, and if the tests come back okay, the injector/s for the affected cylinders should be tested. These are usually tested by dedicated fuel-injection specialists, and they will also give the flow rates for them, upon their ultrasonic clean and return. Your mechanic should check the coil pack/s feeding the affected cylinder/s too. One last question - is your car losing coolant? |

How i wish siena has a branch of his office in Nigeria I have virtually the same problem with my V8 grand cherokee,it all started after i serviced the car,a poignant,thick,carbon-like smoke and particles that comes most times when i am in a hold up with its attendant shaking/vibration of the car engine was the first step in what has now become a conundrum of some sort. I was advised by Sultaan then to change the car engine oil to Mobil XHP 20W 50[used AP oil for the first servicing]which i did ang with changing all the plugs. The black smoke continued with an alarming fuel consumption.I was forced to go scan the car which indicated that i should change the injector, the coils[right hand side] and the catalyst switch which i did change, all this inclusive of all the plugs again[suffice to state this was all under like 2 months] and the oil[extremely black for a 2 weeks old oil by the time it was drained] The problem still persists till now[shaking/vibration of the car engine when at a stand still or in a hold up and black smoke] and i am really confused as it just seems my mechanic is really taking a piss right now advising i scan again and change the noozzles PS;Sultaan this is why i was asking for your email before the holidays. You can kindly mail me here @ kay_pumpin79@yahoo.com so we can chat as soon as i am online. You seem to know much about this brand hence my insistence. Thanks in advance mate |

Get a rewire; 1. Let him bring out the fuel pump to see if its losing pressure OR dirty; If dirty - let him clean BUT if losing pressure, have him get you another one. 2. Let him bring out the Brain-box and reset it. |

kay_pumpin: The cold hard reality is that very few Nigerians are willing to pay for top-notch service. Many are used to the shade-tree mechanics who will keep guessing whats wrong with the car rather than someone who will go straight to the problem and charge accordingly. A typical Naija will rather spend N50,000 buying unnecessary parts over a long period of time suggested by substandard mechanics than walking into a good knowledgable shop and pay like N20,000 upfront and be done with the problem. Just my thought. |

u in lagos?@poster, as u said that the oil level is stable, that means that it can not be that the valves are worn or that the top cylinder gasket nids replacement, Thank God for dat cos that wud ave meant partial to full dropping of the engine am suspecting the kinda oil u use, It might be simply dat its the wrong oil u are using, I strongly advise u to go to an experienced mechanic lyk the 1 i mentioned above, Those guys are toyota specialists and they have neva i repeat NEVER disapointd me, cheers |
