Working from home can be very great as you get to save money and time commuting to an office. You also don’t have to worry about annoying co-workers or a boss breathing down your neck. Some stay-at-home moms who don’t want to be completely dependent pick up jobs they can conveniently do from their couch. Working from home is not only limited to women as there are a number of jobs and businesses anyone can do from home, such as e-marketing, software developing, graphic designing, freelance writing, IT and web services.

Some companies are even starting to imbibe a culture of working from home once a week in a bid to increase productivity. A study by Nicholas Bloom, cofounder of the Chinese travel website Ctrip, revealed that in comparison with the employees who came into the office, the at-home workers were not only happier and less likely to quit but also more productive.

As cool as working from home can be, it is easy to get distracted and inhibit efficiency. Here are ways you can be more effective and get more done:

1. Create A Work Schedule
Just like students have a study timetable, you need to draw up a work schedule that would contain a daily to-do list. Every task on your to-do list should be timed. This way, you have an actual working hours just like people who work from an office.

2. Have A Workspace
Kathleen Downs, a recruiting manager at Robert Half International tells Glassdoor, “You have to have a workplace, and it can’t be sitting in front of the T.V”. It is wise to invest in a workspace with a table, chair, computer and all your work tools. Basically, create an office in your house. This could be a little corner in your house or if you have enough space, you can convert one of the rooms in your house to a study.

3. Be Disciplined
It is so easy to get distracted when you work from the comfort of your house. You could get tempted to take a short nap, attend to the kids or even take a peek into the fridge for a little snacking. You need to discipline yourself so you don’t lose focus. If you are a mother, have someone look after your kids while you are working. Be sure not to attend to any work unrelated tasks while working.
