It depends on the feild as IT is wide... as far as software and project management is concerned you need certifications but if you are trying to show you are a specialist in specific feilds like security and business information systems, bros get an Msc a Phd would also suffice if you get the liver. Regardless, IT is a feild that requires certifications by standard IT bodies. 1 Like |

Kaypro:minimum requirement every is still 2.1 and in rare cases 2.2. What papers you have still count very greatly. Your view is only attainable in the developed nations. |

To those shouting certifications..... Are you guys aware that no matter the certifications you have , you would remain a tactical manager (oh yes!) while a person with Master's Degree ascends to the Strategic Management post bossing over you regardless of you level of expertise? You guys had better embrace reality while discussing things like this than make funny assumptions of what you have 'lil or no clue about 7 Likes 2 Shares |

talisman35: An ever raging argument I must say, this question keeps coming up. Well, I'm a young man still trying to find my feet, and not in a position to authoritatively say which is better, but I think it's a matter of what one wants, do you want to be research/consulting inclined, or do you want to be hands-on/field inclined? The idea of going for a masters just for the prospects of a job doesn't sound appealing to me, most companies still prefer to hire fresh out's for their graduate level cadre. If it's infotech we're talking about, then practical knowledge backed with relevant certifications is the best way to go, or so I think. |

With certifications, no one will even ask you what you studied in school as long as you graduated. IT company pays you for your skills, you can do masters after you start working. talisman35: |

None. Primary focus should be on acquiring the skills. But if you must choose, get a masters. It's valid forever but certification gets outdated and some require recertification after few years. some people here are just making a baseless conclusion, how can you compare certification to a masters degree. certification is just an icing to the cake, masters degree is the real deal. do not be deceived because of the hardship you find yourself. if you have an opportunity to have a masters degree, it is best. because someone with masters degree will sit in the office and head you with your certification while you work your ass in the field. certification expires and it is just an icing to the cake. 8 Likes |

Kaypro:Thank you for this. I have 4 certs. Including cisco and Microsoft. After 3 years in d industry I realised certs only get you in. You need somtin else to give you an extra advantage for growth and promotion. Thats what a masters does. Entry level pple can be looking for certs. But mid level career pple need stuffs like masters and mba to grow in their career. And then keep learning skills. Learn new tech. Dat way you can easily move between jobs and get lead or managing roles. Because gone are d days you need 6 years experience to be a manager. Skills + extra advantage. 4 Likes |

okusebi:1000 likes for this. You will be in dat office with your certs and pple with masters from uk will appear and be appointed as your manager. Though they might not even av d domain knowledge like u do do. Thats one of challenges for mid level career techies in nigeria 2 Likes |

MoyoGENERAL: Not exactly. In d nigerian tech industry, having d needed skills, and having a strong career network is way more important dan Connection. Connection may get u some jobs. But it doesnt sustain you without d skills in d tech industry |
