The Trials Of Aduke:episode One. by Priceless16: 11:57am On Apr 24, 2017 |
Aduke,a young pulchritudinous woman in her mid-forties,lived in the remote village of Ayeti. She had been in Adebayo's house as a wife, fifteen years passed away before her like a snake that walked on a rock with no path. She was barren.Fortunately, she had a religious husband,a Muslim, who believed human plights are from the Creator and He is the one to be beseeched in times of tribulations. "Ile IJA"(a house of duel ) was the name tagged at the house she lived in.Do you wonder why?,well, don't be too curious.Besides the fact that this house was located in a slum, they were two occupants of this house who loved quarrelling with each other over trivial issues concerning their children. They fought on a weekly basis.Aduke, being a childless amongst these occupants, wept whenever the duo got into action. This afternoon, when the sun seemed to be furious, the children were playing outside, they seemed unfazed by the scorching sun.Aduke, was just returning from her shop where she sold children materials like shirt, short knickers, pads, toys, etc, when she spotted Alari and Romoke fighting as usual. She was so flabbergasted that she dropped her white bag, hanging around her wrist on the ground, not caring if it would get stained. "When will you halt this hogwash?",she asked, gasping. Alari was provoked with that question of hers, she didn't hesitate to give her an acerbic reply. "Eh! Aunty,a barren woman knows no pain of motherhood. Don't dare interfere!". Aduke had been warned by her husband to shun the wrestlers whenever they were in the mood to fight but she wouldn't listen. Her eyes dimmed with tears. She picked her bag, slapped her cheek and rushed inside her room. The Landlord who had just woken up by the deafening noise from the uproar, rushed down to the scene angrily. He was taken aback to see his tenants fighting again. He should have given them quit notices but he was a greedy man. He was a pseud. He loved boasting about his dilapidated house, claiming to have bought it with his money in the 80s.No one ever disputed that yet he kept announcing. "Enemies of progress, you have started your problem again",he lambasted them with a jerking voice. He was in his 70s.A die hard fan of burukutu. "I'll send you out of my house and no one will question me",he threatened. Alari stated at him disrespectfully, laughing loud at his vain threats, she called his bluff. "Baba, you had better go and sleep,if you continue talking",she shook her head,"I'll order my husband to stop offering you the ripe bunches of bananas to you",she threatened. He stared widely, aghast and his mouth agape. He couldn't risk losing the freebies. He swiftly chewed, swallowed and disgusted his fury. Romoke could read the expression on his face. She knew him for being a voracious glutton. She shifted her bulk of vituperative words towards him.She knew he wouldn't do nadir even if she spat on his face. "Baba For-Food-only.Unblushing old man.It is evident to the world that you'd die if she stopped the freebies",she reprimanded him. He couldn't give a reply, maybe he had received enough?.Instead,he lit a cigarette and headed to a burukutu joint where Old-for-nothing men had burukutu(a local wine made from maize),undiluted wine, claiming the dreadful enjoyment was to quench their Boredoms. ********************** Aduke was still locked up in her room, sobbing when her husband,a tall man of about 6ft 3ins came in.He had come to pick up an 8 by 9 spanner which he left and was supposed to take along to his workplace. He saw Romoke and Alari spitting fire each other yet he pretended as though he saw no one. He pressed the door's knot and it acted to his command. He was surprised to see Aduke on a wooden chair weeping. He moved closely to the chair, wondering what on earth could had gone wrong with her.He held her palms romantically. Her hands were hot. "What happened to you?",he asked with profound curiosity. She was reluctant to give a direct reply and thought of an indirect one. "Look at every nook and cranny of this room, lock, stock and barrel",she instructed. He was bewildered about the essence of staring at a room which he had been living for several years. "I'm confused now.",he said. "What did you see?",she asked in a low voice. She had lost her voice due incessant weeping. Having asked that question,Adebayo grew more bewildered. So lucky was he that Aduke released her from the cage of confusion. "Did you see any kid?",she felt despondent, with tears rolling down her cheeks.Having discovered the reason behind the question,he picked up his 8 by 9 spanner from an iron box at the corner of the 4 by 2 cm room and left.He uttered no word. She switched on the television, changed the current channel to a particular popular TV program called "Everyday Joli".On switching to the TV channel,a popular song by a Nigerian music icon named Shina Peters was being played. The song came on time. The song inspired her and changed her mood. She dozed off. |
