Spoken Word Poetry 101 by HGAisSimple: 9:00am On Apr 28, 2017 |
Spoken Word Poetry is a burgeoning industry in Nigeria, but under wider consideration it has been around for quite sometime. Curiously, spoken word poetry is to oral communication what literature is to written communication and it came into existence before literature, yet it has become as Esau to Jacob and why? Simply put everyone writes better than they speak, words on paper are self promoting and do not need the extra effort of stress, intonation and affected rhythm. Literature thus had the upperhand (no pun intended) because overtime society concluded that talk is cheap but reading is leading. Recently spoken word poetry has made a resurgence. Because the general level of oral communication has dropped (in comparison to Shakespearan times) it is now easier to deliver a Spoken Word Poem as the "superior speech" or "rhetoric" threshold has been reduced. In Nigeria persons such as Alex Osagie, Olulu and Graciano Enwerem have attempted to catapult spoken word poetry into the mainstream. It remains to be seen if they will succeed.
