whats the differnce...

isnt it just a belief?
we are all humans with conscience and all.. whether or how you choose to live isnt based on beliefs...
but i must say considering what the religious expect on the other side... the theists might be afraid...

but real atheist are free humans who choose to live and explore... and when they choose to die they got nothing to fear...

I believe an atheist would be more open to Euthanasia than theists

I really can't say because I don't believe it is a factor.

I would however believe that the fundamentally religious would be more willing to commit suicide in a general context than atheists, considering how they believe in an afterlife. I mean, just look at all of the suicide bombers who have swept modern news for the past couple of decades.

I don't think religion plays a huge part though, and if it does it is more due to the social pressures of society (which can come from commonly held religious beliefs). For example, I have met many atheists living in places like Egypt and Saudi Arabia who have admitted to feeling suicidal in the past, where being atheist can make ones' family disown them, get one put in jail, or get one beaten or killed by a crazy mob, and where one cannot criticise the backwardness of ones' society for fear of these things. A boy was put in jail for over a year in Egypt for saying that he did not believe in god on Facebook, and it was his own father who reported him to the police.

Again this suicidial tendency has less to do with the fact that these people do not believe in a god and more to do with the way they are treated by others for having those beliefs.

If you look at some of the countries with the world's highest suicide rates, such as Japan, Korea, Greenland, etc, you will realise that there is a lot of isolation, online and offline bullying (a LOT of people in these countries use the internet) and difficulty socialising in the culture and society of these nations. The social stratification in Japan and Korea in particular, coupled with extreme pressure in academia and the concept of confucian "saving face", the increasingly anti-social and isolated lifestyles many people lead, the lack of empathy and the willingness by large swathes of the population to engage in online and offline lynch mobs and bullying campaigns against citizens who gain even the slightest smidgeon of media attention, etc. formulates a recipe for people who want to take their lives.

I think this is a very sensitive issue that have a two edged argument leaning on both sides..

-First argument: A theist is more prone to committing suicide than atheists and reasons being that on the average most theists believe in a life after this, and so on any circumstances that warrants sacrificing this life in order to gain security in the next which is believed to be more and more pleasant than this, many theists will cease any opportunity given.

examples: Atheists do not blow themselves up shouting Allahu Akbar, these are theists.
secondly: I am sure there are far more martyrs who out of willful volition give up their life.

-second argument: Atheists are more prone to committing suicide and reasons may be; The lack of an external authority directly regulating the atheists ideas on suicide, the nihilistic ideas adopted by most atheists thus makes the conception of suicide easier for such a mind. Even though the religious mind believes in an after life better than this, he/she still wouldn't be quick enough to commit suicide if he thinks the odd is against him gaining a pleasant life in the here after.

So based on this contradicting angles i dare say that the human mind can bear a dualistic nature exhibited in our distinct ways of thinking, the intuitive and the analytical modes of thinking. though different in their methodology and influence on a thinking being, the employment of intuition or analysis on differing circumstances may often produce similar answers.

People are often can be diccks, atheists or not ..
