TRUMP’S GOVERNMENT AND THE HEIGHTENING TENSION ON FOREIGN POLICIES: A PREMONITION OF CONFLICT? By Adeniji, Olanrewaju The United States is regarded as a superpower majorly due to its’ socioeconomic influence and military intelligence and hardware possession. It has had it way meddling in the affairs of other nations of the world. While it has succeeded mediating in dispute settlement and has earned accolades in its diplomatic relations with the rest of the world under different presidents, it has equally, erroneously wrecked great havoc on other nations in its quest to meddle in their internal affairs. This may not have deterred the great influence America possesses among comity of nations, however, it reverberates the call for sensitivity and diplomacy of other nations in their dealings with the God’s own country. Today, with the advent of Donald J. Trump as the 45th elected president of America, the wheel of international relations of the revered nation appears to have taken a new direction. Just in 100 days of assuming office, Donald Trump seems to have stepped on more toes and heightened tension and uproar in the world than his predecessors. Unlike the former president Barrack Obama who happened to have always employed and exhausted all diplomatic measures before seeking other means of redress, Trump’s ideology and orientation are entirely different. A couple of weeks back, America lunched a cruise missile against a Syrian airbase killing at least 6 persons. Syria is a country in alliance with Russia, another force to reckon with in foreign affairs. This single move by America is suspected to have incited a slightly rough relationship between the big guns, America and Russia which has created great controversies as to whether the latter would deem it fit to respond in like manner or simple allow it slide. A week after, America detonated the its largest non nuclear bomb in Afghanistan which was reportedly targeted at ISIS fighters in the state. This bomb was initially said to have killed 36 ISIS fighters by the Afghan government until another figure of the death toll surfaced, this time ranging over 70. The swift use of nukes, nonnuclear weapons, military wares and other weapons of mass destruction by this administration has branded America in an entirely different fashion to the world. It must have been a great moment for president Trump who would always at the slightest opportunity portrayed himself to the world as a no nonsense president. However, in an entirely different plot twist, not all countries are as Afghanistan being ravaged by the dreadful ISIS fighters or Syria, a country at war with internal rebels. As the world moves to end nuclear weapon proliferation, America, a nuke arsenal in itself happens to be at the forefront of the campaign. President Trump’s stand on nuclear weapon proliferation isn’t any different from that of his predecessors, however, his approach has depicted an underlying attempt of chaos. The Trump led administration has taken its firm stand against North Korea, an Asian country that has defiled all odd to proceed with it numerous nuclear programmes posing a threat to America herself and a greater threat to the world at large. A little peep into the history of North Korea depicts it as an isolated nation under several united nation’s sanctions. These sanctions have not in any way stopped the speedy manufacturing of the weapons, an area of interest that has engulfed North Korea. Trump in his usual manner has repeatedly issued threats to North Korea, but this time, instead of getting away with each threat like he has always had it, fierce resistance and counter-threat is what has come his way. The lingering crisis between these nations may set into reality, the various predictions of elites who have earlier forecasted Trump plunging the world into a war. With the unpredictable nature of the egocentric America’s president, and the resolute stands of the North Koran’s supreme leader, Kim Jong-un, the unending battle of supremacy may drag the world into a third war. Mods, help me with the right section where this should be.
