Traditions are one thing in Africa that can not be brushed aside and Ethiopia is another good example of great tradition in which women from the Hamar tribe in Ethiopia get whipped to demonstrate their love for their men has been spotlighted by photographer Jeremy Hunter.

The women of this tribe engage in a tribal ceremony during which they are flogged to show the sacrifices they make for their men.

The tradition is known as Ukuli Bula and is done as part of a Rite of Passage ceremony for boys.

To reach manhood, Hamar boys must undergo two rituals: circumcision and a leap over the bulls. This determines whether the young Hamar male is ready to make the social jump from youth to adulthood. During this ceremony, their female family members declare their love for the young men and to prove the sacrifice they are willing to endure, they beg men to whip them.

After the ceremony held in the Omo River Valley, the boy becomes a man and is now allowed to marry.

Hunter shared a series of photographs documenting the ceremony and revealed that after the whipping, tradition allows those women to call on help from those who marked them if ever they are in need of help. Young Hamar women sometimes coat their bodies with butter to lessen the effect of the whipping.

It's their culture, but I think it's extreme.

Yes it's and they can buy pant and bra, but they don't like to join the society in larger scale. They hadn't in the past.

That is why the ppl in the lower valleys of Awash and Omo registered as UNESCO heritage sites, because their cultures are so unique and are living now like their ancestors had lived for many thousands of years.

Those ppl languages are part of the Afro-Asiatic super family language.

This is one society in which feminists should work on.

Of course the law was created by men, and the flogging happens when THE MEN who are related to the women ring flogged are going through their initiation ceremony. All they have to do is jump over some cattle while their women are being tortured. If they fall, guess who gets beaten. Their women.

Weird indeed. I wonder if this their hair is actually created this way(red and dread-like) or they just improvised it themselves. The Himbas also carry this kind of hair-look.

Wow.. from one point this is a setback to Africans while the world is developing nanotech we're still going half naked and whipping women in the name of love.
On the other hand if a woman can bear this pain then she can bear the pains of a wife and that of motherhood or why do I even know
