I don't get why people are talking as if a mortgage is by definition a bad thing - as long as you meet your payments, you're saving up your money in your home. However, if you can't sustain one, it can bankrupt you.

@ chaircover

Abeg tell us where 'up there' is so we can come and drive x5's too.  grin

Does everyone live like a king in Nigeria? No way. Is everyone abroad suffering? Of course not.

Each person should evaluate what he wants in life and how best he thinks he can achieve it. Commit your plans to your creator and give it your best damn shot - that way you won't have regrets.

Access to good information is the key to living well in Europe and North America. Many Nigerians are not informed and this leads them into making bad decisions.  I know of people who've been in Britain for up to 3 years but they can't use the internet and community newspapers to locate jobs. Some cannot fill job application forms properly and do not know how to conduct themselves when they go for interviews. Meanwhile, there are sites online that provides them with all the information they need to make progress in life. There are even home study courses you can take that will get you updated in your area of specialization.

The same pair of shoes you bought at the high street shop for £30 can be bought for £15 if you know where to look for bargains smiley smiley Phone contracts, TV license, travel cards etc also eat deep into the pockets of peeps here. If you're not smart and cut your coat to your size in Britain, you might end up frustrated cry cry Money is everything in Britain these days. Just use your money intelligently and be wise. Information is the key  to making progress in organized societies like Britain cheesy cheesy

No it isn't - instead of dashing off rent to a Landlord that you have NO CHANCE of getting back, get a mortgage and if you get tired, you can sell and regain the money you've paid in (all things being equal).

As long as you have an income to support it, you can even sell off later on and use that money to build your house in Nigeria. If you can't afford it, then a mortgage will be terrible. Then again, for anything good, you must sacrifice something

Not everyone has the same story - each person must choose and be prepared to sacrifice something for that choice. Choose Nigeria, choose 'abroad' (be that China, Vietnam, Estonia or Guatemala abi dem no be abroad? ) just make up your mind to be happy.

Na lie he people that earn such is not many, and who no sabi say Government job which are the ones that includes all those allowance pays better than working for a private firm, lol. Why can't we be honest for once and let the people who are willing to sell their family silver to leave Nigeria for abroad really know the situation on the ground? There is no time threads such as this gets opened without 90% of respondent forming and claiming they know thousands of Nigerians earning 6 figure salaries, and all that jazz, ehn?

Why can't we be our brother's keeper and hit the nail on the head for once? Even those who enter the Country legally have to struggle for years to find their feet cos these jobs don't easily fall into their laps just like that, talkless of illegals? And apart from those who were norn here or those who came into the country at a very very young age, how many people who come here in their 20's and above, upgrade themselves and get what you call good jobs? What do you call good jobs by the way? The job that you do that barely leaves you £200 to save at the end of the month?

Even if you earn £30k per annum before tax, can you afford a mortgage on a decent 2 bedroom house without going to live in the outskirt? My people, lets be real once in a while wink

Honey sugarpie,

I think you are a bit right and a bit wrong.

You are right that less than 10% of Nigerians earn much over 25K. As less than 10% have professional jobs.

But you are wrong, honeybunch, if you are talking about the Nigerians working in professional roles still being around that figure.

The top paying professions are High Finance, Law and Consulting in that order. Very few Nigerians are employed in the core of this roles i.e. I am not referring to the likes of Ops guys in IB or HR girls in Law etc.

Guys in this profession after 8 years would be earning above or close to six figures when bonuses are factored in. But the number of Nigerians in the core of these roles i.e. Front office, Top 20 (US and UK originated) law firm solicitors or Tier 1 and 2 consultancy with 8 years experience would not be more than 200 IMO.

Then if you now look at th other areas where Naija plenty:

IT: Contractors make a killer, over 70K and some as much as 130K (note: no benefits like pension and healthcare). Although rates have been cut recently, I would expect contractors to make in the region of 60K - 80K. Non-contractors (permanent staff) would be in the 40s and 50s.

Engineers: with 8 years would also be in the mid to upper 40s.

Civil Servants: spread across the 30s on average.

Non-IB finance (Retail banks, Insurance firms): can be earning up to 65K

Accounting (certified and/or Big 4): in the upper 40s (mid to upper 50s for Big 4 trained)

Others: in early or mid 30s.

So I think the professional Nigerians are earning well over 25K, baby. More like mid 30s on average if you factor in all (not just those with 8 years experience)

It is too self-binding.
You can't get a mortgage now and relocate at your own free will.
It ties people down.

debosky:

Very easy to say. People have copped negative equity while paying ridiculous amount on their mortgage.
It is like a lottery and based on some spastic interest rate that increases/decreases.
Whats the point? I will rather build a house in Lagos that i can call my own not a leasehold on a silly mortgage your great grandchildren won't even stay in.

As long as you have an income to support it, you can even sell off later on and use that money to build your house in Nigeria. If you can't afford it, then a mortgage will be terrible. Then again, for anything good, you must sacrifice something.

It's the same thing. . . . .Mortgage is like throwing money away.
What mortgage applicants do not consider when they are buying is they have taxes, repairs, insurance depending on region can be multiple policies, and also now falling so-callled equity.

Thank you . . . . If you can get a mortgage its best to take it, yes u want to build a house in naija (which to me has no value undecided) but u can always re-mortgage (u dont have to sell) and use the money u get out of it to go build ur house in 9ja instead of going to the bank for loans.

My friend, i am not saying that
Everyone have been a victim of unsuccessful interviews b4, but many nigerians dont even know how to go on the internet to search for jobs let alone fill up an application form correctly.

chaircover:

Debo me sef I wan drive X5 o! Amen.

Sauron, honestly getting on the property lader was one of the best descisions we took. We were lucky, the timing was good, the price was good and interest rates low.

Many people I know, took out equity from our homes to put a structure down in Nigeria; thus killing 2 birds with one stone.

Some remortged property 1 to pay the deposit on property 2 and so on and are raking in thousands each month in rental income. But as I said earlier it all depends on the timing and the property climate at the time.

Thank you so much cool

The funny thing about Britain is that your destiny lies in your hands smiley smiley I'm not into the white collar industry i.e Banking, Engineering, IT and the other type of jobs that requires me to be suited up with well polished shoes.  I'm a free spirit and those kinds of jobs will only make me restless. So I got a job in the hospitality industry and also do some creative things besides my job. Now I'm not married yet and I'm happy with my kind of job which makes me have access to 3 Square meals daily. And the food is top notch cool cool Like I said earlier on, information is key to living well here. I have not bought food for a long time. My company also lets workers have discounts in selected stores and countryside holiday cottages cool cool with vouchers attached to our payslips. Honestly speaking, my take home pay is good.

In Britain, you'll come across professionals that are earning lower than than Rubbish removals people sad sad . I've seen security workers earning more than those people working the tills @ ASDA, MORRISONS, TESCO and SAINSBURY. I know of a certain council that pays its care workers, cleaners and Kitchen Assistants up to £10 an hour. I know of cleaners who work at private schools and institutes who are earning £30,000 plus yearly. Britain's labour market is very complex and no one can really beat his or chest that they are better than the next worker in wages.  What I won't advise peeps [ especially Naija guys] to do is to marry white girls for papers [ especially when they don't love these white ladies ]. It could turn out to be a curse in the end.

What about all those guys and girls who work as promotions operatives who make between £250-£300 pounds per night if they bring loads of  people into night clubs? It is happening in London o cheesy cheesy

Information is the key, mates. Cheers.

Guy, I can't just stop laughing reading your post. You appear to have centred your mind on the short-term benefit in the UK. I don't know the kind of visa you are currently using to work but if you are temporary in any way (be it post study or HSMP); man, I'll advise you to get a job that will help you apply for extension when your current stay expires otherwise  cry.
The companies you have just mentioned are very much more likely not to apply for visa extension for you because of the new point-based system.
I hope you are aware of all the requirements. However, if you are working in a recognised professional industry, as a professional of coz, you can be sure that Home Office will grant you further leave to remain but on Tier 2. After the next 5 years, you then get your indefinite stay.

So guy, Wake up and stop talking of food and 3 square meals. Most Guys after professional jobs are more interested in the long term benefits.

Cheers.

@kvolander, I don't need a visa to live and work in the UK. I hope that satisfies your curiousity. I hope you read my post properly sad sad Infact, I'm only working because I'm still perfecting plans on starting my media business. When my biz associate is ready, I'll tender my resignation letter. I have eyes on the world, not on Britain alone. And please don't start asking me if I'm British or have gotten leave to remain. Don't like flaunting my stuff on Nairaland. I'm very special to the British authorities. That's all I can tell you.

What I'm trying to say is that you can't put a finger to what people are really earning in Britain. I know the system. Cheers.

Special to the UK government and working in 'hospitality'? cheesy

What won't I read on nairaland.

As always, let each person decide his/her own fate.

Why would being on the till at ASDA make more money than a security agent? Cleaners get 30,000 right? What percentage of cleaners even make that much?

I'm shocked that 'not buying food for a long time' is some form of achievement - is food the problem of people staying in the UK?

You can't put a finger on what people earn yes, but it would be sheer ignorance to claim not to see the masses of master's degree holders doing low paying, non professional jobs. MOST of those jobs are low paying mind you, pointing at an EXCEPTION and using it to justify things is highly irrational.

It's like mentioning that The RBS CEO makes 9.4m and forgetting that the CEO of Northern Rock only makes 700k.

So some people make 300 from calling people to enter clubs? Then why aren't all the naija people squirting perfume and stuff in club bathrooms going out to earn 300 per night as well? Talk is cheap.
