Sadly, whether divorce is free or not, this woman has NO place in this man's home (as his "partner"). She is an enemy of progress, useless, and since she can't even care for her kids properly, he best get rid of this liability.

honestly ,many Nigerian men are frustrated ! see them defending violence like it's a good thing .My parents have been married for 37 years now ,my dad has never laid a finger on my mum .does it mean my mum's perfect ? does it mean they dnt have misunderstanding ? A man who lost his job, running a taxi service and the wife is buying a wig of 180K?
Reason am. When he still had paid employment, was she wearing a wig of 180K?
I would divide that sum by 5 to get the true amount, if the story is true at all.
However, that doesn't excuse the Irresponsibility of the woman, whether its 40K or 200K. There are sadly some women like this who don't have their priorities straight. They do not know the value of money, since they would rather be a parasite all their lives. Some would rather chase men for money as students and afterwards when married still continue depending on their husbands for every single thing they need. I guess they have a fear of going into the world and taking care of themselves.
Some men also like such women anyway, so their equation is balanced.
