Atletico Madrid's Transfer Ban Upheld By CAS Until January 2018 by Nobody: 10:56am On Jun 01, 2017
Atletico Madrid were handed some bad news today as their transfer ban is upheld, meaning the team is unable to sign players until January 2018.

The Rojiblanco received the decision from the Court of Arbitration for Sport today, Thursday, 1st June 2017 that their appeal was rejected.

The club statement labeled the decision as ‘unjust’ and believe it causes ‘irreparable damage’ at the club.

An Atletico statement read: "After the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has dismissed the appeal presented by Atletico Madrid against the penalty imposed by FIFA's Disciplinary Committee on the case of registering players under age and that was ratified by FIFA's Appeal Committee, reducing the financial penalty, but maintaining the prohibition of registering licenses in the next transfer market period, our club wishes to state the following:

"We consider that the decision to support the prohibition of registering players in a second period, corresponding to the summer of 2017, supposes a comparative disadvantage and discriminatory treatment to our entity, since recently and in a similar case, the penalty was partially lifted, allowing to register players starting on July 1. This ruling is unfair and causes an irreparable damage to our club.

"The resolution has been communicated after the time limit established in the agreement signed by the parts, which finished yesterday, May 31, 2017. This shows a lack of respect for our institution."

In December, Real Madrid had their ban for the same offence halved on appeal.

Atletico added that the decision amounts to "comparative disadvantage and discriminatory treatment" of the club, given rivals Real will now be able to sign players in the transfer window that starts on 1 July.

Cas have reduced Atletico's fine from 900,000 Swiss Francs (£719,793) to 550,000 (£439,873).

The ban was handed to Atletico Madrid due to international transfers of players under the age of 18, as FIFA aims to limit child trafficking.

This ban has large implications for their players this summer.

For instance, Lacazette who was reportedly on the way to Atletico Madrid. Now a move to bring the France forward to Madrid will either need to be put on hold until January or cancelled altogether.

Any club wanting Antoine Griezmann’s signature will more than likely be forced to pay his release clause.
