Na wa oo. . .when will you have the details now that the competition is already under way? AUSTRALIAN OPEN 2010. Melbourne Park 18 - 31 Jan, 2010. In conditions more resembling Wimbledon than the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tournament of 2010 officially began this morning with the return of the men’s and women’s trophies to Rod Laver Arena. The Norman Brookes Challenge Cup and the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup were presented to the crowd by former Australian Open champions John Newcombe and Evonne Goolagong Cawley. With a legion of MLC ballkids forming a guard of honour and the Army Fanfare Team playing, the cups were carried up the Rod Laver Arena steps by security guards before being held aloft by Newcombe and Goolagong Cawley. Dual Australian Open champion Newcombe reminisced about his second title win at the Australian Open, which was then held at Kooyong. “The second time I won the championships was on January 1st, 1975 against Jimmy Connors. Jimmy and I had finished off the year, he was No.1 and I was No.2 and we’d never played during the year and I think that match was probably one of the toughest I’d played physically.” Four-time winner Goolagong Cawley, who won her titles in succession from 1974 to 1977, revealed which of her victories was her favourite. “It certainly brings back some wonderful memories , In 1977 I think that was my favourite [Australian Open win] and it was after having my daughter Kelly,” she said. Some early morning rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of hundreds of fans who queued at the gates, eager for the tennis to begin. Following the trophy presentation, roving entertainers kept fans occupied while others took the opportunity to rehearse their chants ahead of today’s play. Day one of Australian Open 2010 features some tantalising matches, with players in action at Rod Laver Arena today including Maria Sharapova, Rafael Nadal, Kim Clijsters, Andy Murray, and Australians Peter Luczak and Jelena Dokic. http://www.australianopen.com/en_AU/news/articles/2010-01-18/201001181263771962375.html |

chic2pimp:Oh Yes she was able to. She is the BEST female tennis player EVER! Infact UP WILLIAMS SISTERS! Serena Williams defiant on return to Grand Slams Serena Williams made a solid start to her Australian Open title defence and then questioned the fine that followed her last Grand Slam appearance. The American beat Poland's Urszula Radwanska 6-2 6-1 in her first Grand Slam match since she verbally abused a line judge at the US Open in September. Williams could have been suspended for the outburst but in the end was fined. "I don't know anyone who ever got fined like that, and people have said worse and done worse," she said. "I just thought it was a bit much, but that was that." She added: "$92,000 is a lot of money to fine someone. I always said what I did wasn't right, but I turned that around and I'm actually raising $92,000 to educate ladies, women, also for my school in Africa, and also I'm giving some money to Haiti as well. The conditions were very tough Ana Ivanovic "I actually think it was good that the whole incident happened, that I got fined, because at the end of the day I'm raising money for other people." The top seed wore heavy strapping on her right leg as a precaution and was below her best against Radwanska, but still had far too much power for her teenage opponent as she won in one hour and 13 minutes. Former world number one Ana Ivanovic, the 2008 runner-up, also progressed after she beat Shenay Perry 6-2 6-3. The Serb has slipped to 21st in the rankings over the last year, with her serve a particular problem, and she made five double faults and faced nine break points against Perry. "The conditions were very tough," she said. "It was very cold and windy and a lot different than at the Brisbane International or what I've been used to. "But I just tried to work my way through, just taking time and tried to stay composed. I thought I played well and served good." Elsewhere, eighth seed Jelena Jankovic overcame a slow start to see off Romania's Monica Niculescu 6-4 6-0 and set up a clash with Britain's Katie O'Brien. Australia's Sam Stosur, the 13th seed, was less than convincing as she beat Han Xinyun of China 6-1 3-6 6-2. Virginie Razzano, the French 18th seed, tumbled out at the hands of Russia's Ekaterina Makarova who clinched a 6-2 6-3 victory. But Razzano's compatriot, 11th seed Marion Bartoli, did progress with a straightforward 6-4 6-1 win over Rossana De Los Rios of Paraguay. Serena's sister Venus, a finalist here in 2003, begins her campaign against Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic in the first of Tuesday's night matches on Hisense Arena. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tennis/8466965.stm |
