The attention of Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM), Nigeria has been drawn to a recent job advertisement by the Civil Defence, Fire, Immigration and Prisons Services Board (CDFIPB) published in the Daily Trust newspaper on Monday, 22 May 2017,

The advert listed sixteen categories of individuals that are excluded from applying for the job advertisement.

As a Professional body that is charged with the regulation and advancement of the practice of Human Resource Management in Nigeria, we find unacceptable, any recruitment process that is discriminatory. It is even more distasteful where factors like medical challenges, deformity, impairment or pregnancy are listed as disability and bases for exclusion. No Nigerian, who is willing and capable of working, should be denied an opportunity to apply for any job that he/she is qualified for.

The Institute strongly condemns this act and is therefore handling this matter directly with the agency concerned.

The Institute would like to encourage all hiring organizations, whether public or private, to always respect diversity, avoid discrimination and ensure a transparent and competitive recruitment process for all candidates. All CIPM members are also required to influence and guide their organisations to do the right thing at all times, especially, in promoting good labour/best practices in HR.

You will be kept informed of progress made on the matter.

Registrar/CEO
