This day celebrates the natural environment and allows a global platform to raise awareness on the environmental issues worldwide, with plans to mitigate these issues as a global community.

The theme for 2017 is 'Connecting People to Nature – in the city and on the land, from the poles to the equator'. The host nation is Canada.

Below are pictures of how our most cherished nature has been destroyed in different parts of Nigeria.

1. More pictures of environmental degradation due to oil spill in Bodo city in Niger Delta
2. Picture of illegal refineries operating in the Niger Delta area.
3. Pictures of drinking water source that has been contaminated by oil spills
4. Pictures of indiscriminate waste dumping activities that has aggravated environmental assaults in the Niger Delta

It is also known that majority of our protected forest areas are currently facing huge neglect and thus Nigeria has lost quite a sizable part of our forest area in the region of 2,048, and 3000 between 2000 and 2005 only.
