Driving on the roads especially in Nigeria is not a Child’s play. It needs concentration and one hundred percent attention in order to achieve safety.
Carefree driving is what led to so many auto crashes and loss of lives on our highways.
The gory sight of accident scenes are traumatizing and heartbreaking as several precious souls and loved ones have been lost due to care-free attitude of so many Nigerian drivers.

World Health Organisation (WHO) in a report adjudged Nigeria the most dangerous country in Africa with 33.7 deaths per 100,000 population every year. According to the report, one in every four road accident deaths in Africa occurs in Nigeria. A conclusion drawn by Nigeria Watch states that next to Boko Haram insurgency, road accident is the second highest source of violent death in Nigeria.

Yes, we can eradicate or reduce accidents on our roads if we can act upon this articles because it has been discovered that most accidents occur on weekends, that is between Friday-Sunday which is why this article is here to expose the dangers of weekend driving and how to avoid it. They are:
1. Drunk People From Clubs:

When you are driving at the early hours of Saturday morning, you need to move cautiously as most of the road users within the cities like Lagos, Portharcourt, Abuja, among others are drunk people coming from club houses.

Many of these people close from their offices on Friday and moved straight to the club houses where they eat and drink alcohol to stupor till day-break after which they head straight into driving themselves back home. Having been under the intoxication of alcohol, their driving will be without caution and over speeding will be the order of the day. This is mostly on Saturday morning.

Solution: Don’t drink and drive and if you must drink, don’t drive. If you have not gone clubbing, drive with care and watch out for drunk drivers.

2. Tired Drivers From Parties:

Another danger on the road while driving on weekend are the set of drivers who are coming from parties and are already tired. This is mostly common on Sunday morning. Such people would have engaged in dancing and excessive drinking of alcohol overnight, before they take on driving as soon as daybreak. The risk is caused by tiredness and drowsiness. In fact some may be vomiting while on the steering.

Solution: Don’t party all through the night if you are to drive. Take time out to sleep for at least two hours before you drive. If you must drive, don’t drink. If you are not coming from parties, drive with caution giving adequate gap to all other vehicles and drive slowly.

3. Sleepy Drivers From Vigils:

Another danger of driving on weekend is that there are drivers who are coming from vigils on the road. So many churches have their vigil on Friday night to Saturday morning. having been in an all-night praise and prayer session, they will definitely be tired and unfortunately, such a man will pick up the car key to drive the entire family home.

This has led to the loss of so many precious lives because once the fellow dose off within few minutes, the result is always a fatal accidents which may claim lives or wreck the car.

Solution: After the vigil, ensure that you sleep for at least one hour If you must drive within the same city and if you are driving to another state, have four hours uninterrupted sleep. Drive slowly.

Please, don’t allow over-confidence cut your life short, sleep after a vigil.
Be safety conscious, let's join hands to reduce accidents on our roads, follow the above instructions.
