The Bafana Bafana of South Africa beat the Super Eagles of Nigeria 2-0 on Saturday, as the race to be at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations kicked off.

But what were the five things we learnt from the match?

1. The defeat is on Rohr

If you thought the team sheet looked funny, then you needed to be patient to see the performance. Atrocious. That Moses Simon managed to outshine Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho in attack, but still was woeful, tells the story. Iheanacho was isolated upfront. Rohr should have pulled him back and introduced a proper striker like Osimhen or Kayode. Iwobi was pedestrian all game.

2. Time to get rid of Onazi, Echiejile, Akpeyi

Captain for the day, Ogenyi Onazi, was pathetic. He lacked presence of mind and was unable to dictate play from the middle of the pack. For a ‘senior player’, it was Oghenekaro Etebo and Wilfred Ndidi, who tried to cobble it together in midfield. Echiejile was a disaster in left-back. One wonders how he keeps getting a call-up to the team. Akpeyi could have taken one for the team for the second goal, but then we overrate his speed of thought.

3. Super Eagles finally lose to South Africa

So, finally, South Africa have their day in the sun. The Bafana Bafana has never beaten Nigeria in a competitive game. And what a way to do it. Stuart Baxter’s men were organized, disciplined and precise when they struck. They could have easily won it 5-0. It is also the first defeat for Rohr in charge of the former African champions.

4. Bad start

Rohr’s men are already third in Group E of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying series. Libya top the group after crushing Seychelles 5-1 in Tripoli. It’s looking a tough stretch for Nigeria already, as they will still need to face South Africa at home. They might just miss out of the tournament for the third consecutive time.

5. Rantie’s turf

So this is the third goal Rantie is scoring against Nigeria. All at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo. The burly striker was a subtle menacing presence all through. He hassled and tormented Troost-Ekong and Awazie when he could and opened scoring with the simplest of headers. Now to the small matter of facing him in South Africa next year.
