Actually the MK1 golf was made up till 1983 with some registered as late as 1984, so whilst the GTi's are regarded as Modern Classics you can still buy a basic Naija friendly 4dr Golf 1 for 500Euros in Germany whilst the 404 was last assembled even in Naija in 1977 (OK 1991 in Kenya) or so 2 years after the Mk1 was introduced.
However it would be more prudent to buy the later Mk2 which is slightly larger and even cheaper.

I wouldn't use a VW Golf I as a commercial vehicle.

A Golf I is very spartan, and unrefined, they were the same even when they were new.

The oldest surviving ones would be 36-years-old, the newest 27. Do you honestly think these will be suitable for commercial use? As cars restored for personal use, it makes more sense. As taxis, unless you're handy with the spanners, I'd advice against it.

Much as I love German cars, for commercial use in Nigeria, Japanese models are a hard act to follow, both in terms of parts availability, and ease of repair. You're never too far away from a Honda or Toyota specialist.

My choice for taxi's in Nigeria? Honda Accord / Civic, Toyota Corolla / Corona.

What's weight got to do with operating a taxi?

It still has an engine, so you won't be pushing the car!

As for weight, I'd say it was light - as you were after a Golf I, I was referring to a Honda Civic / Accord of a similar year, so will weigh about the same as a Golf. Golf I will require more maintenance, due to its age.

What yr were u refering to? And what amout u think one can get it on a toks.

@sienna, well said! But i will still strongly advice the poster 2 go with his golf but an MK2 instead, every roadside mechanic in benin is capable of handlin the MK2 effectively as its one of the most populous cars in benin, If not that he can go for an audi, ie the model before A80,

I would go for a Mk2 1.3 or 1.6 as they are one of the simplest cars out there and whilst some would argue that they might not be as reliable as a Japanese car, I find the older low tech carburettored VW's to be extremely rugged, very easy to work on, cheaper spare parts and with much stronger bodywork than any Japanese car.  Just the kind of car that would be suitable for use as a cheap taxi.
You can also buy a very good Toks for 250-300K you will have trouble finding a serviceable Japanese car for that.
I would argue that a Mk2 Golf has got to be one of the best value for money fit for purpose cars, you can buy in Naija today, and as Calabaman rightly put it the Audi 80 1986 - 1990 carburettor model is the next best alternative you can buy a very good Toks for about 300-350K, but beware body parts are considerably more expensive than the Golf.
